Retire
My wife is 62yrs can she retire at this age we have been married for 25yrs she has not work for 20yrs she stop working after she got breast cancer. I did not want her too work anymore I'm still working in 60yrs old I just wanted to no the facts thank you

How can your wife retire if she has not worked for 20 years. If you are talking about your wife being able to get SSI she probably should have been getting it 20 years ago when she was found with breast cancer. Go to the Social Security office close to where you live and see what they can and do to help you and your wife.

I'm thinking of early retirement also, and i just spoke with a lawyer. She advised me that.here in Illinois your retirement is based on your birth date and year. So it's possible that she can retire and the amount of money will be reduce by 13% or 20% depending on the year she was born. Good luck and God Bless you both.

I read all the responses Bernard, but I don't think any of us are government employees and qualified to answer with the facts. However, it is true that if she wants to accept her social security now, instead of waiting till she's 65, she would be awarded a lessor percentage of it. You can go directly to your local US Govt building where Social Security is housed and make an appointment to speak with a qualified deliverer of this information. I think if I had started drawing 3 years ago, I'd have received a third less. Maybe 40% less, I really can't remember to be honest. Make the appointment and go visit with someone there, you will be glad you did.
If you hold out till you're 65 Bernard, and keep working, the budget will probably be just fine. But please remember these things can change as fast as we elect new presidents. They are already continuing talks as to making 67 the new minimum age to file, and there's nobody who can wait that long. Respectfully, Philip M Brockman

You can technically retire at any time, but if you take early retirement you can't collect social security. If she is disabled then she can collect disability. You need to update your local social security office about life changes and they can give more exact information.

You can retire at 62 but you take a pay cut

You can retire at 62 but you take a pay cut

yes, because let's remember retirement isn't about age it's about income, I know some ppl in their 20s who have now walked away from their jobs and are living financially free

I think so i mean my mom retired at like 35 but that was because of her income. I think you can retire at any age. I think the stigma of being 60 years old to retire comes from the ideology of by then you will have enough money to sustain your selves without a steady in come.

I think your wife can collect disability.Good luck.
Hello She can take Soc Sec at 62 but it will be less. They go by how much you paid into it through the years of employment. Since she has not worked for 20 years she might as well take it now. They will base it on the years she worked.
