So i have been in home improvements for over 20 years. Mainly installations. But estimating and some sales. When i contracted my own jobs my tattoos did not seem to bother many people. I still sold jobs. I also sub contract and do sales and project management. Latley i have been getting alot of judgment on my tattoos. What do u guys think about seen tattoos . Remember i am a professional at my trade. And managers have told me i am the most qualfied when i go in for a interview. But i dont get the job cause if my tattoos I also have played in a working metalcore band. I love tattoos!

Joshua, Tattoos should not never be an issue in any work place or with any clients. I have no problem with anyone wearing any tattoo unless it shows violence or hatreds or are gross or vulgar, those emblems, or that type of message. But, in the business world that is taboo to show them. You have the freedom to get as many as you like you like but cover them up for business and show them around family and friends. The job market is tough enough and if you need to change anything, regardless of how minor, then you will need to do it. See if that works - try it like an experiment and report back to us. I personally will never get a tattoo - I fear the health issues and do not advocate them for health and safety issues, but aesthetically OK - I have never judged anyone who does. Their are lousy business people, sales reps, and managers without tattoos. Before cover up vs. after cover up.

Contracts Manager at City Of Austin

Hello Joshua - You sound like you are an incredibly talented professional. I am a Boomer and do not have an issue with tattoos, but I also have a very broad respect for may things ALL individuals do not have....Back in the 60's tattoos were looked upon as a rebellious free spirit....With that said, and with the open and "Edgie" individual it sounds like you are - As part of the professional it sounds like you are, I would try to maintain a healthy respect for your customers that you can only hope they will do for you. "out of the box" thinking sometimes frightens some people....have no idea why....but it does. With that said - after your customer become acquainted with you....the tattoos will not be an issue....my best to you! It sounds like you are doing great...

It's in my opinion that tattoo's should not have anything to do with your professionalism, I regret to say that people are judgmental toward a lot of things in life.

it really shouldn't matter but I guess that would depend on the kind of job n how formal they are

What should matter most is how qualified the person is, not the tattoos, race, gender, age, etc. I used to work with a guy who had a lot of tattoos. He was a VP of Sales in a well known national brand and did an outstanding job.

I hope, we will see in our lifetime a shift in a workplace when the competence would be the most important factor to get a job.

Good luck!

Personally, I have tattoos as well. I am honestly against the tattoo discrimination. At my current job we started hiring people with tattoos but they have to wear long sleeve shirts to cover them. I feel as long as your tattoo isn't offensive or has some sort of cursing on it you should be able to work anywhere. This type of discrimination should be illegal just as any other.
