New to Jobcase
Hi everyone, Just wanted to introduce myself. I got laid off on 6/22/18 from my previous job as a Hospice Social Worker. I have been a Social Worker or Case Manager, for many years in various settings, working with all types of individuals. I feel that I have many skills and qualities to offer an employer. Have sent out more resumes than I can count, and have only had a few interviews. I have an interview today for an ADvantage Case Manager, and interviews with Department of Human Services next week. I feel so discouraged at times, and feel my age and appearance has hindered me. I am a very big girl, which has never hindered me in performance in the past. I maybe wrong about the age and appearance, but I am pretty good at reading people. Most jobs in my field are looking for people with a Masters degree, and I only have a Bachelors Degree. I would love to go back school, but not in a financial position to do so. I just started receiving services from a Career Navigator, through WorkForce Oklahoma, to get individualized support. I am doing a free trial on a resume building site, to improve my resume. I am not opposed to a career change, and have been trying to really assess my skills in looking for employment in different fields. I appreciate all the employment leads that I have been given on Jobcase. Have applied for all that I am qualified for. This community is amazing, and I am willing to take all help given. I feel my interview skills are good, but could be improved. I also do my research ahead of time, for positions I have applied for. My confidence level is low, but continue to plug along. Any advice on interviewing skills, ageism and even thoughts on how to prove that my skills and experience, override my appearance, are greatly appreciated along general support. Thank you all, and wish me luck on my upcoming interviews!

Hello Mary: A job search can be exhausting and disappointing for sure, but there are jobs out there, more than ever in some fields. As a Social Worker, Case Manager and Hospice Social Worker with a Bachelor’s degree, you may have more opportunity than you think. I Googled that area of the health industry, and there is strong growth as the US population is aging. The overweight and age issues are no help but the fact that you have mailed tons of resumes and applied hundreds of times since 6/22 to get only a few interviews may be a result of what is in the resume itself. Sometimes we focus on the wrong things and don’t highlight the needed qualities correctly. I would first consult your U.S. unemployment office to get an interview and an opinion, and perhaps also a professional resume writer. I just want to make sure your resume isn’t sabotaging your chances. See if you do better by taking off the dates from your resume. Not knowing the reason for your layoff, I can’t draw conclusions, but if it happened after many years of service and it was performance related, you may want to make sure to remedy whatever may have been the trigger for the layoff. Did you know it was coming, were there any tip-offs, was there a shift in the business, was there a change of management or supervisor? Secondly, it is true that appearances are important. Is it possible for you to lose weight? I bet you can. And, as far as age, there is a lot you can do about it. The right hairdo, makeup, and attire can take years off your appearance. And if you think and talk young, this can change perceptions too. You’ll have to pick up a little speed of movement and speech, but it can be done. Dresses are better than suits when you are big. Darker colors – and no stripes of busy patterns. No heavy jewelry, no perfume. Get busy, go to every meeting, every networking group, every party, social setting and get-together that comes along. Meet people, talk your heart out, become an extrovert and let’s see what happens.

Good luck Mary!

Elder Care Consultant jobs work from home. 62 years old can apply for your Social Security but limited in what you can earn. If 65 - 9 months no limit to your earnings.Assuming you are a Baby Boomer.
Laid off - are you getting your unemployment.
Given your background- I’m sure you are well aware of this.
Try American Red Cross in Oklahoma- since Oklahoma has a lot of Disasters & Red Cross employs a lot of older workers with backgrounds like yours.
I can relate to your situation & wish you well - hoping this helps.

My congratulations

Go and make it happens ma'am

I wish you success on your interview along with my prayers. When you go in there go with confidence and hold your head up high, you are worthy of all the good there is to come.

I think if you are truly doing all the things you mentioned in your post ,then it is inevitable that you will land a job .IF AND ONLY IF,you continue to do so.

No this is a scam. Because I got an email stating that Busch Beer would pay me 500 a week for advertising they logo. I got the check for 1875. Recently, but it didn't come with no number on it or nothing And then they wanted me to send 900 somewhere in California. I Blocked all contacts from whoever that person was.

Wow slow down, you have so much to say as if running out of time. Actually your skills and experience are all there. Find out behind the scenes the company goals for future progress and find out what they're actually looking for, and with confidence explain to them why you're their best person for the position, is that simple. Relax and breathe in the interview. Everything is amazing when they realized you exactly what they're looking for all along. Good Luck !
