Who me?

I have been working in the U.S. for about 15 years from working in a flower shop to doing day care. I have always gotten jobs through family friends. Two months ago, I got laid off due lack of funds in the daycare. I have tried everything from application, career fairs, career services connected to my nationality. You name it I try it! Now, at 50 my last resort is to go this network event my friend invited me to, but what do I say to people, I have no idea who they are?

Hi,

Google 30 seconds pitch. That's what people are talking about in a nut shell. It's an introduction of you. Make sure you use key words that are positive. Ex. Instead is mentioning you were laid off just say that you have over 10 years experience in abc and you're currently looking for xyz.. Think about your jobs you've had. Florist for example would have customer service, cash handling, organization and time management skills. Talk about your passion. Practice it before hand and as you interact with different networks you'll realize what is working and what isn't. Don't mention your age and don't mention that all your jobs have been because of who you know. Keep it short and positive.

Good luck!

Nilda, I just responded to Josephine Carter's suggestion which is a great one. I added my thoughts, and suggest you practice your conversation to open up to another individual who is there to network as well. Talk about your interests, what you are seeking and why you are attending the event. Mention where you see yourself in 5 - 10 years and ask the individual questions as well. The person may know of a job or have a good contact that would work for you. Always bring lots of business cards and have some resumes handy. Good luck.

I think you should try freelancing, instead of depending on somebody. Since you have worked in flowershop, why not try selleng flower arrangements(Bouquets) Sorely your friends will help. You can try your networking in this business, which will probably make you financially independent.

Ask for a job. Ask if they need help NOW. Ask them what skills you need. Ask them when and how to apply. Ask when you can begin to work for them. ASK QUESTIONS

Hello Nilda, Networking events help to get to know people who probably work similar or different field. It helps you to have open perspective to career paths. It does not always lands you a job on the spot, but it can land you a connection to a job in the near future. Check to see if there are other networking events with your cultural background.
