Worried about Job Security?

Should I be worried now about the impact driverless trucks are going to have on professional trucker jobs? I’m a 21 year old now working a dead end retail job and desperately looking for a career job to get my life started . I get job offers from trucking companies every day offering good salaries and a sign on bonus. The average cost for CDL training, testing, and licensing is $5,000 - $6,000 in my state. That’s allot of money but not a bad investment if I could make a career out of truck driving. I’m worried about job security.

Retail Sales and Service

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but everything is eventually going full automation. Technology replacing solutions will take over a bulk of the service jobs that unfortunately make up the highest percent of available jobs opportunities within the American marketplace. Exporting manufacturing job overseas for cheaper labor wasn't the only contributing factor to the death of blue collar building and assembly jobs in the US. The introduction of Robotic technology to replace manual labor played a huge role as well.

Max, Follow your heart and go get your CDL license if that's something you feel drawn to do to earn a living. The money and driving opportunities those companies are recruiting you for are real life changing jobs if you're able to perform well and find enjoyment doing them. Self driving cars and trucks are big news now but that technology is still in a testing phase and is going to require more time before it's 100% market ready. Not to mention our trust and comfort with driverless vehicles on the road. Take your training and get licensed. Good Luck!
