Cashier at Wendys

CRAP everywhere...literally!

So I had the worst job a few years ago. I was working on a farm shoveling...yup you guessed it, cow crap. I needed the job to pay for school and I was already working two other jobs when it was offered to me. I figured WHY not?! I didn’t JUST shovel manure, I also milked the cows which was definitely an experience let me tell you.

The smell was BAD guys, I mean really bad haha but you get use to it. I could even stomach waking up at 3am to go milk the cows. What I couldn’t stand was my boss most of the time. He was a mean old man. You know the kind you expect to see in Disney movies, the bad guys...yeah that was my old boss. He made my job miserable!

When he screamed at you I swear he could literally wake the dead it was THAT loud. He would just yell ALL THE TIME at you or worse call you stupid over and over. I have dyslexia so sometimes things get mixed up in my head and he would make it more stressful by insulting me. I would just take it on the chin and smile through it. I needed the money. It’s funny, but now that I have a new job all these years later and a totally different life, I can’t help but think how that job changed me even though that boss was a total jerk. It taught me that hard work is so important even if it’s difficult and also how to deal with those people that you really want to punch in the face, but you know you can’t. I had people depending on me and I had to make sure I was there no matter what, because unlike a big company a farm is more like a family than anything else. I think that bad jobs don’t necessarily have to be “bad,” we can learn from them and take a little something away.

What was your worst job and what did you learn from it?

That's rough! Nothing worse than a boss that's a jerk! Sorry that happened. Ummmmmm my worst job was a summer scooping ice cream. It was so HOT in this little box we worked in, the customers were rude and impatient, I was sticky and covered in ice cream all day long and my fingers were frozen. My friend who worked with me (I am not joking) actually got frost bite and had to go to the doctor's office. Kids would also drop their three scoop cones on the ground and we would have to remake them. I loved the people I worked with though they were awesome. We were all in misery together which was nice in a way...oh and the tips were good too. I would never want to scoop ice cream again tho unless it was for myself at home, hahaha.

HardWorking Self Starter!!

Ouch! I had a similar experience years ago working a summer job in road construction. The job was basically digging ditches to lay pipe for power lines used to light up the highways. The job was labor intensive and the foreman was horrible. Getting handed a round shovel at the beginning of the shift meant you would be digging for the next 8 hours. I thought about quitting every day but somehow found a way to keep challenging myself in the morning to grind it out. I learned to work hard and endure difficult workplace situations while keeping my cool.

Content Manager at Jobcase

I had a part time job that I could NOT stand quite a few years back. I was waitressing at a very high end restaurant and the customers were great, but the management was definitely not. One in particular was involved with one of my co-workers and she would often receive the best tables that were outside on the water while the rest of us were stuck inside. He often would force us to do more side work as a result of giving her none. He favored her and it was clearly obvious. I tried to make the most of it and after like 6 months of this treatment suddenly this manager was mysteriously gone. This sadly happens at a lot of restaurants. It was hard to find a good one as I worked to pay for school. I learned that I should never allow anyone to treat me poorly, it's just not worth it. Thanks for sharing Arnold! : )

Lpn at Bon Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital

Arnold I haven't worked with cows hahaha, but I have worked in the medical field for quite awhile as a nursing assistant and have my fair share of stories. I once worked (I won't name the place) at a nursing home in my town and my boss didn't believe in wearing deodorant. Not a big deal right? WRONG! She smelled horribly and we would have to sit down with her once a day to go over the patient's status and grab our paperwork from her. She sweat a ton and everyone was too afraid to tell her. I mean HOW do you say to someone nicely...hey you smell bad?! She was also bi-polar which is totally fine, but she didn't have medicine for it and she would be wonderful and pleasant one day and the next a nightmare. We are all pretty much terrified of her. BAD job right there! I learned that although she wasn't too wonderful that I worked with amazing people and had great patients. I loved them and always will. Glad you are in a good place now Arnold, farmers work sooooo hard!
