Should I Stay or Should I Go ?

I work for a nonprofit television (PBS) station as an editor. I love the work we do and I truly believe in our mission statement of providing quality programming. The production people I work with are more like a family to me than many of my own family members.

All that aside, the pay is about $15,000-$20,000 less than the national average. I make enough to pay rent and utilities and have some fun on the weekends , but I cannot afford to save anything. I’m torn.... I’d have to move out of the town I love to find greater opportunities with a bigger paycheck. We’re basically the only tv station in our area. What are your thoughts and advice when considering options?

My dear, that is a very personal decision. None of us can make that call for you, and any advice we have might be misguided since there are always unseen personal factors at play and your feeling on this might change tomorrow. I would suggest attempting to negotiate an increase, but I know how it is with non-profits. Nonetheless, some non-profits have more financial stability than others. If you're brave, it may be worth a try if you feel that your work is valuable and you bring a unique contribution to the agency.
