Received a job offer, but not a job start date?!

Hello everybody!

Last Thursday I was interviewed for a job, and Friday morning, I received a call saying that they would like to go ahead and start the screening process. I asked "does this mean I got the job?" and she replied, "Yes, you got the job"

So I went Friday afternoon to sign the paperwork to due to my background check and to get the paperwork to do a drug screen. She then said, "I'm hoping for your start date to be Monday, February 6th"

Yesterday morning, I sent an email to confirm my start date, and that she could go ahead and run the background check. Her exact response was...

"The start date isn't a positive thing right now while I'm working through these issues. Additionally, I can't send the background information until they release the information but I'm actively working on it."

What does this mean? Should I maybe start doing another job search just as a backup? I don't want her to forget about me or retract the job offer. :-(

Give them a little time, companies these days are very slow moving, they call it back logged. I went on an interview as well and was told my start date would be the following week. Well it turned out to be three weeks later but I still started and that's all I wanted. So give it time, and then you have to figure in the pay period because that's a factor as well. I know you're anxious, there's nothing worse than waiting on a response from a job. It'll come through, Congratulations are in order. I wish you much success in your new position.

Never stop looking. They are still taking applications and interviewing candidates and will continue to whether you get hired or not. The latest trend is to hire and fire before you start. "Sorry, couldn't clear it with management. Budgeting reasons."

Personally, I would go the job place and ask to speak to someone from the HR to find out about the process, why it's taking so long. Sometimes you can talk to the wrong person over the phone .

Lizzy please take my advice. Wait until you know you have the job for sure. I understand that you are excited that you got the job offer and I'm excited for you. I really hope and trust you got the job. However reality says you don't really have the job yet. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you will share the news soon that you really got the job. When it comes to getting a job I don't believe it until I've completed all of my paperwork and I know for sure the start date. I don't believe anything anymore until it's actually happened.

I would continue to look. While background checks can be a pain the process should already be in place. I am not saying that they have done anything wrong but until you are sitting at a job and getting paid for it there is nothing concrete.

Get back out there and start looking for a job. You may be passing by other potential jobs for a hope. Not good enough for me to fly on.

Hi Lizzy: It still sounds like you have the job, so I wouldn't worry too much! But if it makes you feel better, put a few other applications out there. I would keep in touch with the hiring manager throughout the process so you can stay in the loop about what's going on. Let us know what ends happening!
