Pursuing a Hospitality career with a general business administration degree..
I want to make a career change into hotel management without having to go back to school for a Hospitality degree. I found an excellent management training program at Wyndham International Hotels but it looks like they tilt hiring preference to recent Hospitality graduates and internal applicants. Does anyone have any suggestions how I can make this happen without going back to school?

I worked in Hospitality for over 15 years. I got a job working at the corporate office in the accounting department, and all I had was an accounting/business administration degree.
On many occasions, the people they chose to be hotel managers were internal candidates that had either worked at the front desk or in sales. So working your way up is very possible.

I agree with Alyssa. You could get hired at a hotel at a Front Desk position or in their Sales Department. When interviewing let the person know that you are interested in furthering your career in the hospitality industry and after being with the company for a bit you would be interested in their management training program. That also lets them know that you want to stay with the company and grow your career with them. Good luck!!

I like what Alyssa said. Work for them first. Gain a track record. Make contacts! Try front office management or somewhere in the accounting dept. even a night auditor! I was well versed in basic accounting and office work. I got to be an office manager at a food service company. I couldn't cook! Flexibility and transferable skills and business know how did it.

I don't think its all that uncommon for hotels to recruit business degree candidates for management. The have management training programs that expose new managers to all areas of the industry.

Hi Scott, Would you be interested in getting a job with them first? Getting to work with them for a little bit and then doing the training program could be a great way to move into management, since they have already worked with you. Just a thought!
There's a value placed on your educational background Scott. As long as your dedicated to the industry and willing to learn. There's always an opportunity for you in the hospitality industry. Quickest way to management is in Sales.
