Fire Fighter at Plainfield Fire Department

Switching positions

I’ve been a firefighter going on 12yrs and now looking to transfer to the police dept within the same town. I always wanted to become a police officer but I was told that I have to resign from my current position which is fine but would have to start from step one in pay. I’m currently at top pay and vested in the pension system. I’m already apart of city’s budget and you think it would be a simple rollover. I really want to do it but can’t afford the lost in pay. It would take 13yrs to get back to top pay and I only have 14yrs left. Just upset me that they won’t honor my city and pension time being that it’s the same City!

I am sorry that they don't honor your service in terms of what step you would be on. In teaching if you switch districts in RI they put you back on step 1 even if you've been with another district for 15 years. It doesn't matter so I feel your pain. I would say stay with your current path and perhaps see what you can do. Have you spoken to your boss about this?
