Till death do us part?

I’ve been working at a warehouse since October in a seasonal position. I’m trying to figure out if I want a permanent job here… or not. The work seems ok, but I’m concerned about safety and if I’ll make enough money.

For those who have worked at UPS, Fedex, Amazon… what has your experience been like? If you could do it over, would you stick with it as a career or would you pursue something else?

I think a lot depends on what type of life you want, goals, ambition....I have not worked those places but I worked at a food distributor when I was younger. Most of the guys had been there for YEARS. On the safety front-- they should be practicing safe work standards or they can get in trouble. We had to wear steel toe shoes and back braces were provided. They supported familes on the pay, but I think also depends on cost of living in your area too. Keep in mind they did not live in houses that even cost 100,000 or drive fancy vehicles. Of course if you want to stick it out and become a supervisor then you will make more- but still not rich. It probably will be dependable work- as long as you keep the job of course. But how fancy of a lifestyle do you want to live? Will this support it? or even in the future support it? and what other benefits are there? is there medical, 401k, etc? or maybe even school reimbursement for you to better yourself and use this as a stepping stone to a better job? hope this helps even a little bit.

Hi Mike,

I think you asked some great questions. I also think, though, that you won't really be able to make your decision based on the experiences of others. Some people like warehouse and packing type work, they might like knowing there is a quota to fill every day and see it as a personal triumph when they succeed in fulfilling it. Others may take those jobs because they need the income, so it would only be a stepping stone for them and they might hate the work itself and despise having to answer directly for the amount of work they are expected to perform. Safety can also depend on the employee. For example, I would see all warehouse jobs as dangerous because I am a klutz. I shouldn't be packing things with bubble wrap, I should be wrapping myself in it permanently. I am a danger to myself and others so it's an office life for me (even then they took away my stapler.) Point being, yes, there are some things that are dangerous practices in general, but other things that some people might do without blinking an eye and they wouldn't consider their safety having been at risk at all. One more thought...people that aren't good at what they are doing tend to hate it, and could be inclined to blame others rather than admit it, so again you would have to make a decision based on your own skill set, likes and dislikes and not the experiences of others. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do!

First and foremost, if you feel the environment's not safe, you already have your answer. No amount of money or job security is worth the price of your health.

Take the permanent job and the benefits. And, keep looking for something that doesn't make you question if you should stay! If you like the company, see if you can find something less physically demanding.
