Seeking advice

I've been working maintenance at a hotel for the last 3 years. I like my job but it's not really something I see as a career. My problem is finding a job that relates to my military experience. I have electronic repair, calibration, and electro mechanical experince plus I have my associates degree in electrical technology. I've tried the union but i dont want to have to train all over again on what i already know.

There are increased efforts to have states recognized military training as a valid credential, so check with your Congressman s office to see where your electronics experience fits in. Also check in with a nearby technical school, as they are on top of the certification process, and your next job might pay tuition for advanced training. The Consumer Technology Association is a good resource, plus of course IEEE. In the electronics field, I am aware of demand for techs to repair dialysis machines (for kidneys), HVAC, solar installations, and security systems for homes.

Apply for jobs in the electronic/electric field. Years ago my brother retired from air force and his background was electronics and he got a job working on ex Ray equipment. My background from military was ordnance and administration I got out of ordnance, but I have been working in the HVAC field and it has been good to me. Follow the desire that you have set as a goal.

If the union has a bonafide apprentice program that upon completion gives you Journeymen status and a certificate of completion it might be the ticket you need. What you seem to be lacking is industrial certification.

My son was in your situation. he started off with the Marriott. He is now working for casinos, has been promoted twice, has obtained his HVAC licence, is in the process of starting his own business, and is in line for management, all within 5 years. he had no training in the private sector or in the military. You have what many employers are looking for. Don't sell yourself short.
