Hi Jenneria,

You must have some kind of work authorization to work in the US. That can come in the form of a green card (as you already know), or a work visa like the H1-b (if you're highly skilled), a seasonal or temporary work visa, or a special student visa that permits you to work for one employer while you're in school. Without a work visa, I'm afraid there really isn't a legal way for you to work. One or two other people here suggested getting a job as a nanny, but I strongly caution against that. It would not be a legal arrangement and it would put the family - and you - at risk, so I must strongly disagree with that suggestion even though I'm quite sure there are many people who willingly take that risk.

I'm a senior certified HR professional so I'm speaking from some fairly sound knowledge about this topic, although I am not an immigration specialist by any means. I've just gone through the process of sponsoring employees for H1-b's and green cards several times. Getting solid work authorization definitely takes a lot of effort and also a good bit of financial investment. It may not be exactly what you want to hear, but in order to do this right your best bet is to contact an attorney who specializes in helping people like you get the right work visa for their situations. Google "immigration attorney" in your area and you'll probably get some good hits. I wish you all the best!

If you dont mind, may I ask why you dont have a green card? Forgive my ignorance, I dont know a lot about illegal/undocumented entry into another country. Do you have a passport? I ask because all of the jobs I have ever applied for legally make you complete an I 9 which pretty much guarantees that you are legally allowed to work in the US and they are very thorough in verifying the information. Do you have a SS card? I guess like someone else suggested, you can do baby sitting and or house cleaning. Some people will hire you. Based on the class of people who hire nannies, theres a very slim chance that you would find a nanny job, but then again, what do I know? But personally, I would not hire an undocumented person because I feel that I am taking employment away from a legal citizen. No ill will intended, I just dont believe in blowing smoke up people's ass. Im telling you my honest opinion. Maybe someone with more experience in this area can give you a better opinion.

Not Good - Are you here legally? If so you should be able to get documentation. I guess maybe I don't understand your question.

Hi Jenneria Dewiw,

You should offer your services through www.nextdoor.com

Nextdoor is a community bulletin board where you can share information with your neighbors. You simply create an account, create a profile, and Nextdoor will identify your neighborhood based on your address.

Once you have created your account, introduce yourself to your neighbors and let them know what services you can provide. babysitting, eldercare, cleaning, etc...

Depending upon your community you may have hundreds of neighbors active or none. It is worth a shot though and will help introduce you to your community and make friends and contacts and might just land you an opportunity to make money.

Hi Jenneria! You will most likely be able to get a job as a nanny while not having a green card. If you want a different job, unfortunately, it is difficult to find employment while not having a green card. That said, I would take a look at this website here which should be helpful having recently immigrated to the U.S. - please don't hesitate to ask more questions!
