Frustrated........Not Giving Up

I was laid off in November 2015. I have had a heck of a time finding a job. I have updated my resume, updated my skills on top of my Master's degree and still nothing. I go on interviews and I do not hear back or I receive emails that I have impressive skills but they found someone more qualified. I just don't understand it. We are now in a position that we will lose our home and my husband has decided that I should go work for McDonald's (jobs) instead of the Controller/Accountant that my degrees are in. I resent him for saying that and I am resentful because no one is hiring me. I'm not sure what else to do......Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. With 35 years experience they want to hire you but knowing the experience they don't want to pay for it. I think it's about the area you live in. The city pays alot better than anywhere else but I live too far away. I've had to go to a t emp agency so I at least can work on & off with companies close by me that can afford to pay for experienced people. I just found a permanent job through them

Besides using the local temp agencies .. even if it's not a permanent position, it does help pay the bills, and keeps you skills sharp. A couple of good recruiters will help you sift through the companies that are just resume shopping and those who are legitimately looking to hire someone.

I'm with you--25 years of experience and a master's degree and having the hardest time I've ever had getting hired. I'm looking at federal jobs--they HAVE to look at qualifications and justify not hiring the person with experience. I think it's more likely that older experienced workers can get a fair shake in civil service. Go to usajobs.gov and see what's near you. Pay is good, and it seems like I've seen some finance/accounting/comptroller type jobs posted. Until then, work at a retail job in a store you like--surround yourself with pretty things and people who share your tastes until the good job comes along. It won't be long now--better days are coming for all of us and you're a day closer to good stuff!

Hi Heather; I am in the same boat and might lose my house. Unfortunately, I don't have a husband to help me out. Perhaps you and your husband can compromise and take a part-time crap job, which will bring in some money and still leave you time for job-hunting. I rent out a room in my house to help make ends meet, and also dog-sit for people on vacation. Every little bit helps. I have been out of work for 1 year and 9 months and have applied to 823 jobs.

Heather, I too am in your position. I have been out of work since January. Same scenarios, I get emails or letter "impressive but hired someone else" or the interview and then here nothing. I have learned that you need to tailor your resume and cover letter to the job you are applying for and accentuate your skills and experience in conjunction with what the employer is looking for. I have also learned from a class I took that when you get an interview the employer already knows and thinks that you are capable of doing the job you are applying for, it is a matter of "selling yourself" as the best candidate for the position. Perhaps your local career center can help coach you on interviews, what you should ask, how to present yourself, etc. And if you are getting super discouraged you could try working through a temp agency if there is one in your local area. I know some people may not understand you not wanting to apply for just any job. Sometimes in life our expense to work, travel costs, wear and tear on a vehicle, uniforms, etc cost more that what you would make or you would simply break even with no financial gain. So what's the point right? I totally get that aspect. My husband and I had a sit down and we know what we need to do to be on track. As for your home... Try asking the mortgagee what options are available to you in lieu of foreclosure. Perhaps they can revise your loan or maybe give you a temporary forbearance. Above all, just don't give up. Hope these things help.

Hello Heather, The outsourcing and shrinking job market are what you are up against. First is there a temp agency and temp positions in your area? If so take whatever is available to get thru this. Second , see if there are any teaching accounting positions available or substitute teaching positions. Don't lose your attitude and don't stop networking by talking to people. You may find a government agency or small business that needs an accountant or bookkeeper.

During this period of hardship, please avoid getting emotionally down including resentful. Read "Job" if you haven't. It's about keeping your faith during trials. Know that every no is one no closer to a yes. Fight hard to keep your house and fight even harder to get your next job. Pray daily for wisdom to speak to the right individuals. We are in an election year call your senator and congress person and ask for help. Write the two presidential candidates and ask for help. Best Wishes Frank

One option I have been pondering is selling the house and hiking the Appalachian trail. Then, come back and live in a campground with a small towable trailer home. I am in the same boat as you with a degree and electrical design experience. Few interviews and no offers to date. I've never been good at the interview game, which to me feels like a game. The best people don't get hired but the best sale pitchers do.The paradigm we are immersed in never looks out side the box. Being at the mercy and ire of corporations to get their low pay is not what being a human is all about. I feel your pain.
