Working For You

I was in the exact situation a lot of moms go through. It seems like society has no idea what it takes to become a mother and then transition back into the world. My children are big now but I am still home. The reason is not by choice. When they were little I felt my real obligation was to be the best mother for them. For me that meant sacrificing my wants for their needs.

I have worked over the years. However, it has now become where is my place in society now? I have always been a person that get creative when I have to but every now and again I like returning to the workforce. That is where i am now in life. Only issue I have is that society is not so willing.

Even though I have all the experience I have. Even though i have the education I have. I am still struggling to get back. I work online as an affiliate marketer but I still need my purpose in society. Not sure what to do but any advice would be helpful

Thanks for reading!

Great post, Lisa! Sounds like you're looking to have more impact than you feel you're having at your present job. Lots & lots of people find themselves in this situation, so you're not alone!! I've heard the same thing from Ivy League lawyers, high-finance executives and senior managers who run big companies. At a certain point in your life, you will need to decide what's worth YOUR time... that's right... with the limited amount of time you have during the day, what's worth it to you? The good news is that there are new companies/positions/markets being developed ALL THE TIME. There IS a position out there that will make you more fulfilled - the challenge, of course, is finding it.

So.... it's time to start doing your homework. Find out what type of job you WANT. (this is the most-worthwhile-but- hardest part, believe me!!) Basically: What type of company? What industry? What role within that company? Start talking to people about their jobs - do "informational interviews", which is where you ask someone for 20 minutes of their time for an informal conversation. Come to the conversation with a list of questions. Ask about how they got their job, what they like/don't like, what they feel makes them successful, why their company is a good fit, what they would change, etc... you'll find out a lot about them, the company, and you'll potentially be able to get a contact from them for your NEXT conversation. This kind of networking is critical for you to expand your horizons. Start with people you know well - from school, church, your current business, etc. Set small goals for yourself (e.g. reach out to 3 people per week) and keep it going! The more lines in the water, the more fish you'll catch.

Once you have a direction, then keep plugging away. It's hard work - and if you're a mom, I'm sure you've got LOTS of things pulling at your attention - but keep moving forward. It'll be worth it because you'll find a great company & job.

Good luck, Lisa! Use that determination to do something good for YOU! Best, Marijoy
