Is it common?

Is it common for a company to have a third party company conduct a background and drug test prior to an interview?

As far as I am aware all applicants considered for hire must pass a basic background check and a drug test. This usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.

Hey Joseph - it’s not uncommon to do a drug test as part of the interview process. In my experience it was the final step before employment, but I could imagine some companies may want to do it before the interview.

Most companies will pay a third party to do the background checks, physicals, drug tests, etc, because they don't have the facilities or personnel to conduct the tests or investigations. The third party is considered a "neutral entity" in the decision process and eliminates bias for the company as well as the candidate.
