Background check insight
I was hired for a job, and when filling out the background check waiver, I was asked if I had been convicted within the last year. Which I had not, it’s been 15 years. After the background check was conducted, the job offer was rescinded, and I was told even though it only asked for a year , they run a 10 year check anyway. Can they do this?

Unfortunately, companies have the power to go as far as they want into someone's history though some will state they will have a cutoff. There is no official laws restricting how companies control their hiring policies for ex-offenders so they have complete discretion. I have heard that the type of conviction plays a big role in the type of job you are eligible for as well.
