Asking for a break?

As a single mom, it’s pretty draining looking after my kids and balancing my sales job. I think I need to take a few days off just to take care of myself, but I work in such a competitive and result driven work environment. Not too many women survive in this business and I don’t want my coworkers (mostly men) to look start looking down on me. Anyone have any advice on how I can approach this convo with my male manager? I don’t want it to be awkward.

Marilyn, We all need a break sometimes. Do you have personal days? Can you use a couple vacation days? Since you are in sales is it possible to work from home? Some companies offer mental health days and most offer personal where no explanation is required. The fact is that the stress is probably hurting your performance at work and if they do not see it you are in a jam. The fact that you can not go to management and discuss this openly raises a red flag with your organization to me. Nobody performs their best without some sort of recharging. wally

I agree with Esmay. If you have days you can take, just tell your boss you are taking x number if days and don't give any explanation. Typically, they usually don't ask why if you are taking personal days. Best of luck to you in getting it all balanced out!

Marilyn, Most companies offer Family Leaves of Absence. Forget abut the men you have GIRL POWER!!!!! Just ask this male boss and tell him you ned a little break and you are not quitting and do not fire you.. You are just worn out. and need a little break just a few days maybe. Do you have vacation time you could take? If so maybe take a few days from that. Best of luck. Lisa Renwick.

Most larger companies provide PTO (paid time off); you're not required to furnish an explanation for WHY you want to take your PTO.

I actually disagree with talking to your manager about it. I feel like you’ll be looked down on because you “can’t cut it.” Just take a couple of vacation days and leave it at that - no need to reveal personal info.

I hear you, being a single parent can be a huge struggle. Is your manager a parent? He may not be a single mom, but I’m sure he’ll understand where you’re coming from.
