WTF!!
I’m pregnant and working as an associate retail manager. Everyone’s been awesome about my pregnancy, except for a certain group of people - CUSTOMERS. I wish I was lying about how many customers have put their hands on my stomach as soon as they realize I’m pregnant. I know they’re not trying to be creepy, but it’s rude and invasive and it pisses me off. How do I deal? I feel like I don’t have anyone to talk to about this because I’m the manager!

No Marleen, I think you need to be more obvious about it. Tell the customer that you appreciate their excitement but you prefer not to be touched. I don’t see why we need to be worried about other people’s feelings when THEY’RE the ones touching YOU.

Wow, I can’t believe people think it’s okay to do that without asking! I would just back a few steps away when they do it and just keep talking. I think your body language should be enough of a hit that you’re not okay with it.

I know this can be frustrating. Remember that it is temporary and people go crazy over pregnant glowing women and the creation of new life. These customers may not realize that they're upsetting you or crossing boundaries. Be tactful and honest. Just let them know how you feel if it continues, or post a notice "Please do not touch the pregnant woman, hormones may be making her cranky" that may get your feelings across without putting you in another awkward situation, but could add a little humor and relief. Good luck to you and I hope you can find peace from the baby bump blues.
I can see both sides of it. On the one hand, people are just programmed to touch pregnant women’s bellies to see if they can feel the baby. On the other hand, that baby is still in your belly, so they’re actually touching you. If it makes you uncomfortable, speak up.
