How To Respond To Reference Requests When Prior Employers Use Automated Verification Systems Only?
The last two employers I've had do not provide verbal references. They use an automated system which only verifies title, employment dates and salary. This is the law in both the state where I worked as well as the one I live in and am now seeking a job in. But all applications continue to ask for three references who can speak to my character. I'm a director so I can't ask one of my former staff. Anyone who did supervise me won't risk breaking agency policy/law in the event they say something they shouldn't. I do have people who can act as a reference-colleagues but I don't have 3 and I'm concerned interviewer will think I'm lying. Not sure what to do; had a string of bad luck-third prior employer closed and I have no information as to where the owner is. Employers know the law but continue to ask and if I disagreeing fearful I will lose out on potential jobs. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Do you have other people who weren't your direct boss but still above you that could be a reference for you? That is one thing I do. I use one of my supervisors as a reference instead of the managers. This could be something that works for you if you have it. Also, people you put as a reference to speak to your character don't necessarily need to be ones you have worked with. I think a personal reference in this case would be just fine! Does anyone else have any thoughts?
