"Don't they have something better to do with that money? seriously?!" The above quote was what an incredibly rich (and very caring and philanthropic) friend of mine (think centi-millionaire) said about someone else in her wealth class. That quote jumped to mind when I read the attached article. I actually don't begrudge self-made billionaires. Often, such as with Gates, their wealth is a byproduct of huge contributions to our economy and thus good-for-them. But I do think there is a responsibility/opportunity that comes from such wealth creation. And, I can't help but to question the type of self-indulgence discussed in this article. Think what $65mm/year could do if applied more strategically to serving people. I hope these folks turn the page, look around and start to think about putting people first. Gates himself strives for this , and often succeeds greatly, via his philanthropic foundation. Let's hope more of his class continue to take that example. Lets hope more try to impress with their good works, and less try to impress with superyachts anchored in St. Martins... Because, really - I am just not impressed. Show me someone whose life work is helping others and I'll be in awe.
