More Hours in High School

I’m so frustrated right now. I’m looking for a job for when i’m in school this year, but there are so many rules about how many hours I can work because I’m 16. It makes me feel like getting a job isn’t worth it, cuz i’ll hardly be making any money. Gah!!

Hi Will,

You probably don't just want to make money now, but you want to make sure you make money in the future as well. So your number one priority right now should be school, to increase your changes that you'll have more job opportunities in the future. Also, having that first job is good not just for the money but for the experience. As you have probably read on Jobcase, having experience helps with your resume and getting future jobs.

I know it can be frustrating when you want to be making some money and you're young, but remember, you want to make sure that you increase your chances of making money in the future too. And, for this having done well and graduating from school + having experience will increase your changes of getting a good paying job later on.

Best of luck!

Will, besides money what else do you want to gain from employment? Picking up a trade or experience is just as valuable to take to your next opportunity. That and staying connect to school will put you in front of others. When you engage in something you are passionate about, the time spent is not really work, it is an experience. The laws are in place to protect you. Appreciate and enjoy.

Hi Wil, Those laws are in place because they want to make sure you’re leaving time for school. Don’t be so focused on the paycheck that you lose sight of what really matters - your education.

Yeah, unfortunately that’s the way the cookie crumbles when you’re a teen. I think once you hit 17, employment laws are a little more relaxed about how many hours you can work.
