Department Manager at Jc Penny

Who is this guy?

The store where I’ve been working as a cashier for the last two years announced that it’s going out of business. It’s not a surprise to any of the employees because they suspended hiring and started shipping merchandise out of the store since January. Right now there’s a skeleton staff working to liquidate the remaining merchandise, breakdown racks for shipping, and servicing shoppers. Since the announcement the manager has done a 180. He’s disrespectful, argumentative, and unapproachable with the remaining employees which is major problem for us because there’s so much work we need to get done in a short period of time but can’t get any direction or support. The work environment is horrible! Everyone is nervously looking for a safe place to hide out to avoid getting yelled at. I already started looking for another job and I’ve thought about quitting but I need the cash and I want to make sure I remain in good standing so i can get a good referral for the next job. Should I report him to corporate or just ride it out for another 2 months?

I would continue to look for a new job and ride out the 2 months to get unemployment just in case you don't find a new job.

First of all, try to remember that your boss has just lost his job also. There's no reason for him to be nice anymore. It's either the stress causing him to act this way or he has been like this all along and had kept it well hidden. You have two choices. Either buck up and power through it or file a stress claim through Worker's Comp. But go to your doctor first and get it validated.

Ride it out while looking for another job. Just play it safe and everything should work out.

Hang in there while looking for another job and not to forget about unemployment guidelines. Begin marketing yourself, you probably have more skills than realized. Make sure the resume is updated along with a good cover letter. Don't panic but plan, just keep in mind your time is precious so don't procrastinate. Wish you well in success.

Assistant Manager at Fallas Stores Inc

Elizabeth, I have been through three store closings as management. There is a lot of stress involved. If you have had a good relationship with this guy, try talking to him. Or ask an assistant to talk to him. The main thing in closing a store is to have a little fun with it. It's crazy enough with all the customers without losing your cool too. Peg

It's only 2 months. Do your job and keep it moving. you never know what's going on in a persons personal life, so just be friendly and finish the job. I know it might be difficult but I'm pretty sure you can handle him being a jerk. Keep a positive attitude and everything will work out fine.
