Engineering Project Manager at Texas Board Of Professional Engineers

Would you take a horrible job at an Awesome Company?

After 6 tiresome months looking for a career related job this is the dilemma I unfortunately find myself. I have to choose between accepting a terrible customer service call center job at an great company or continue the job search. Excellent options for an experienced engineering double major don’t you think? People tell me it's a foot in the door but I think it can also lead to a boot in the rear on my career if I get fed up with the call center abuse. What would you do in my situation?

I am now in the same situation but I do accept those jobs because I have to pay bills. My advice to you are go to those jobs thinking positive. It will make them easy to work at. You will have a great life if you do not look at those jobs negative and think positive your life will give you a chance to think more clear and figure out what you really want. Yes accept the job if you need income that is what I am doing with a smile because I know that something better is on it way.

I know what you mean. I have been out of work since July 2014. Having a hard time finding a job to many people out of work. I lost everything I had like my house and car. I lost out on a interview because of no car to go on interview. If I don't find a job by this fall I am going to go live on the streets!!!

take the job it is correct a foot in the door and a person is more likely to get hired while employed than unemployed, continue your search as you battle the customers, might not be as bad as you think. if it is a good company they will provide you with the tools to deal with customers, always kill them with kindness.

Well first of all let me say this I have been looking for employment since September of last year it's no picnic I've been turned down from several positions due to being over experienced or whatever I've had to accept now the first job that was offered to me I think it's a pretty easy decision for you if you know this is a good company it could end up for the better for you..... You never know. It could wind up best decision of your life.

All of the responses, so far, are just opinions. You need to base your decision on facts. If you had not yet asked this question during the interview process, call the person who made the job offer and ask, "I am looking for a career, not a job. What would the career path look like for this position?" If necessary, point out your skills/degrees and say you would like to strive for those areas. Finally, ask the life expectancy of a call center incumbent. Do they work there for 2/3 years and then go to another company or are they promoted from within? If they are vague in any of the responses and they don't make you feel good, .or if they are concise with a clear path for you, I believe it will be easy to make the correct decision. Good luck.

Call center work seems a low percentage to track to something engineering related. It depends at what point you are in your career, what your family needs are currently, how old you are, and what your ultimate goal is. You may want to take the call center gig and keep looking, as "a bird in the hand...."

Hi Franklin,

I am in the same situation as far as looking for a job. I have posted my resume on every job sight; companies contact me to schedule an interview. I have had second and third interviews but can not finish the race with a job. I search the job sites everyday and I see this same job posted in which I had a first interview with at the end of January and a second interview at the beginning of February. What am I doing wrong? Is it my age (52)? Looking for advice.
