Resume/Cover Letter Gaps in Employment History
Hey everyone! What is the best way to explain long gaps in employment history? I've been on SSDI for 10 years and want to know if and where this gap should or should not be explained. Thanks in advance!

Hi, You can use a functional style resume to highlight your strengths in relation to skills and work experience to and focus less attention to your employment gaps. I would avoid explaining specific reasons for take time off work until asked.

Typically long gaps are looked at as possible criminal history, so it is good to address it. The question you need to be ready for is this. "You have been on SSDI for 10 years, what has changed, and why are you ready to work now"? Are you going back to work because the government is tightening up some of the funding programs, or do you actually want to work? If you are at least ready to answer those questions you won't get blindsided. I would get ahead of the issue, and own it, as people tend to respect that approach more. There may be very good reasons, but be ready to overcome the objection or question. Good Luck...
