Here's what I don't understand
I've read so many posts about people over 40 or so not getting interviews. I know one reason is they think we don't know technology. But, if you worked, don't they realize we HAD to keep up with technology? Or even was out of workforce, we had to keep up. And since we weren't born with a cell phone in our hands, we had to put in extra effort to keep up? Also, the thought we would not work for younger bosses; I don't really care, it's about respect. Maybe I can't text, read, ride a bike, and blow bubbles at the same time, but I do know "if you're early, you're on time, if you're on time, you're late", how to speak clearly, look someone in the eye, and not shake hands like a dead fish. And, if I didn't want to learn something new, I wouldn't apply. It used to be an employer wanted to see that you held a position for longer than a year. I'm not sure when anything over 20 became old and outdated. Heck, I've got a 93 year old aunt that texts on a flip phone for heaven's sake. It's just too easy to hire young people, lower pay, no benefits. If they quit or get fired, there is another one waiting to take their place. The govt might as well give 40 something's Medicare, and retirement. Just wait, when power goes out, the millineals will be lost. Ever give someone 5.01 for a 4.51 item? Their face is priceless... Ah, just on my soapbox. At least I can read and write cursive, and know there are 7 continents. Lol. I guess we just got to keep plugging away, but I refuse to get a lip ring and gauges just to get a job at Target...I'm thinking of just throwing convention out the window, and write a cover letter to just get their attention, at least to see if they'd at least want a face to face..what the hell? Good luck everyone, the new wave of applying for a job is so frustrating, and some companies don't even have the courtesy to let you know any status. I also feel I should take off half my roles at my last jobs "overqualified" okay, one last thing, I promise...research just proved there is no such thing as multitasking.!

You're absolutely right. It should not matter that you're over 40 or older. If you're qualified and have what it takes to do the job. That's what matters. Your work history will speak for itself. Good luck in your new journey.

Lol

You make a lot of good points. People over 40 are just as capable as millennials and way more reliable. Best of luck to you in your job search.

Totally understand how you feel. I'm 48 and can't work in the restaurant business anymore, and even if I could nobody wants me. Trying to pursue other options but because of my age nobody will give me the time of day.

You said it just right. I am 62 and am in the best shape of my life. I go to the gym 7 days a week. You would think I was dead. I look 40. But no one knows, because you’re right there is no face to face

I absolutely love what you wrote!! Kudos to you - you should consider starting your own business. God bless you and may He lead you to that special place He is holding just for you. Don’t let it get you down - instead just rise above! Best wishes for you :)

Well said!

I am so sorry it is so frustrating to you, Karen. It is really all about credentials getting interviews right away. For every day jobs, interviews are often not even done. Those doing the hiring usually look to see if it is documented what your computer skills are, so if it is not in your resume', add it. Good luck. I got my dream job last year after I had retired and I was not looking, so you might be surprised - I was. I connected with the director on a phone call, so you never know. Hang in. GBH

We that are seasoned workers I found to be true in these days the employers don't want to pay us for what we are worth, so they hire the younger ones. Then they have the nerve to ask you to show them the ropes. To train them to do our job so they can offer us early retirement; like we don't know what is happening.
That was a very good post! I am 47 and quit a job after 27 years (took many temps jobs but landed a job I had no skills in other than numbers and computers) I work for a worldwide multi-billion dollar company now and everything is so antiquated is it like using DOS. (I am the 3rd oldest there, my managers are younger (I am the only other female there)) I have been there a little over 3 months, I learn new things everyday and show my managers things they didn't know. (I have been called into several manager's offices and when they tell you to shut the door and sit down you think *Oh **** here it comes, but was told that I have gone over and beyond their expectations for me and corporate has noticed) All the kids sit around playing on their phones all day (I use mine for calls or texts) or the computers....I was hired for a job and I do my job and it is being noticed.
No one is never too old to learn/work....these kids don't understand the concept of work they want to be able to play a clock.
I got my job as I had been applying for everything/anywhere and all times of the night and read something wrong (most applications ask for yearly not hourly so basically I asked for $72,000,000 a year).....I got a call and she said I wouldn't make more than she does and didn't understand...I went and she said they wanted to just meet the person that asked for that, I nailed the interview and the 2nd one also.
