Age descrimination
I know by law employers can't discriminate against hiring older workers but they do and they get around it. When I was first laid off from my job after 27 years due to outsourcing I was 50 years old. It was hard looking for work but I was persistent and after 6 months finally found what I thought was the perfect job! I loved it and planned to work there until I retired. Then again after working there for 8 years they outsourced and I was facing yet looking for a new job but 8 years older. After many job searches and interviews last year and finding out I was not the only person out there that felt they were not hired because of age I was about to give up when I found a full time temporary job that had a very good possibility of going full time permanent. I loved this job! Was exactly what I had been looking for! I kept being told that there was a good chance i would go full time! I was there 5 months and they went behind me and hired a young 20 something person without even letting me know and I was let go. I was the oldest person in the office! No one else was over 45! Most were under 40! When people say employers don't age discriminate I beg to differ. And it's harder and harder to find work at almost 59. No one wants to invest in you when you are like 5 years away from retirement. I am currently looking for work again and starting to panic.

Are you 8 years in?

I am in the same situation laid after 27 years due to outsourcing when I was 46 years old. I have since had several contract positions and now at 51 find myself yet again laid off with little prospects. Being a female over 50 years old and under educated I am having a hard time getting back into my lifelong career as a Software Engineer in the aerospace industry. I have an A.S. and certificate but that isn't enough nowadays and unless I have an B.A. employers aren't going to consider me. I looked into back to school but this isn't feasible because I can't afford it. My unemployment will be ending soon and if I don't find a job soon I will loose my house and have to take money out of my 401 savings plan.

This is exactly what I have been experiencing for the last 2 years. I was once told that I was the best candidate for the job by the company recruiter, and when I went to be interviewed was told in so many words that I was overdressed. I was wearing plain black pants, black flats and a plain white shirt. This from a 30 something that looked like she had just crawled out of bed! I know it was my age. I don't know what to do. I am about to be 62 years old.

I don't know how electronically inclined you are, but there is this company, that was looking for people to do repairs on instruction guided, and video training,, minor repairs, they send it to you, you repair it at your leisure, and send them back. I did a job at an elderly community, unassisted, just retired, and the gentleman and his wife was doing the repairs in their garage, they said they recruited other people their age, and they seemed to like it. if its an interest, let me know, and I will dig up the info.

its an issue that's not going away, if you're military, spouse or veteran, call Chalmers p Wiley, John in human resource, Mr. White in mental health side of bldg., he doesn't work in mental health, he haven't got a wing opened yet, and I cant remember the guy from the VA Police Dept. they hire us elderly, police was looking for dispatcher, and I believe Mr. white was hiring receptionist, and shuttle drivers. Good wishes Ms. Bosch

I have experienced the same thing until I do an actual face to face. I am told I don't look my age. However, once it is shown on the resume I have been overlooked and on numerous occasions. Age discrimination is suttle and discrete. I

I feel for you, I'm in the same boat after 14 years! Worked at a company that I was dedicated to the company & the family and they had to let everyone go! Now they did keep to 2 youngest and newest and less expensive. Also less experience, but was told I can get a job anywhere with all my experience. Guess what, like you said no one wants to higher anyone over 40. I went to a staffing company and one of the question was, Are you over 16 and under 40? I was shocked! But now looking on the sites for a company that is hiring only! Trying to stay positive, I wish you the best!

Hi? I'm sorry to hear, I'm in a similar situation, FYI be as proactive as u can. I work with mostly young, and I'm looked at as the scape goat. But please keep in mind you have wisdom they don't have and endurance to make it work. Check AARP for support and legal help. Good luck.
They say that they don't discriminate against age but they just turn their head and forget about you.
