Jobs and credit

I had an interview this past Friday at a bank, which I really want this job more than anything. I am thankful that I am employed, but this is a much better opportunity. But I found out that I may miss out on this job due to the fact that I was not able to make a payment on 2 of my credit cards due to being off work sick. This makes me sad. I feel that I am one of the hardest working people I know. And I would work extra hard to make this company not regret hiring me if they pick me. I will continue to pray for this breakthrough. But I advise anyone to make sure while you are going through the job seeking process to make sure that you try to keep your credit up to par. This could be a deciding factor in your future employment. But I will remain hopeful and positive through this process.

The reality of this is that you need the job to pay bills or get them up-to-date. For most people who are not employed, trying to get employed would really be impossible if it is based on your credit. How are you expected to pay for something that you do not have money to pay for it? Yet, many times the jobs that we feel would be an opportunity, sometimes they are not. There might be something even better waiting in your future. Hold on and be patient. Your hope may be more effective than you think.

It's a vicious cycle that keeps many unemployed. They have good credit, lose a job and fall behind. Then because they fall behind, their credit suffers and they can't get a job. And the quickest way to lose a good credit rating is through medical expenses. Don't get in an auto accident, get hurt, and have less than top of the line auto insurance coverage. That can do a person in, credit wise -- especially if the party responsible for the accident has no, or poor insurance coverage. You can't sue someone who has nothing.

Congratulations on the possible opportunity. One thing to remember is that when you work or could work in a field that requires money management or personal information (in your case both), a credit check is required.

From my experience employers check credit to see what debts you have and your ability to maintain any assets. If you are moving forward in some form of hiring process any documentation you sign in agreement for the credit check will tell you what is being reviewed within your credit. You having missed two payments might not affect you or it could, you never know but it will depend on the bank and hiring management if they can overlook this minor detail compared to major credit issues they’re looking for.

As Lenin has previously stated, I also agree that you should check your own credit beforehand to prepare ahead and see if there is anything that can potentially affect you. Maybe there’s something you can do to resolve the negative impact on your credit. You never know unless you research and prepare.

Best of luck!

Hi Manika Ford , Congrats on making it to the interview round for this job opportunity. It sounds like that employer is seriously considering your candidacy for that job.

Your concern is understandable but you might not be out of the running due to two missed bill payments. Finance organizations always take an an applicants credit standing under careful consideration for obvious reasons but those employers are also very willing to work with employees that represent borderline risks. Do you know your current credit score?

Online tools like Experian.com are quick and easy ways to get access to your credit score immediately. Look online for these options to get an idea where you stand then let the recruiting process work itself out normally. Just be prepared to address any credit concerns with that employer if those questions arise.

Keep us updated on your progress with this employment opportunity. We'll have our fingers and toes crossed for good news! Have a happy holiday. :-)
