I was a very dedicated worker worked for my other peers stayed late when needed went in early when needed went above and beyond for my clients for my company but I became severely sick but instead of my company helping me out I had to quit for 9 years I payed for long term and short term disability and I was denied so I had no choice I had to leave my job my illness became worse and worse and to my company I was just a head on the seat and it's sad cause this is a top 100 place to work for if they truly only knew if you don't have someone in the inside your time at this place will be short it's truly sad cause it's a great co pay I loved my drivers and I loved helping them all out .but my life and health had to be first ....I will keep the company in cognito cause they might try to die me for slander but what about how degrading they treated me 9 years of harrassment mentally and sexually the hate of woman co-workers it's so sad to say I'm now on disability for depression anxiety ptsd and for severe panic. Attacks and for IBD I won disability after 3 years of suffering its truly sad how you give into a company for so many years and one person can turn your whole life upside down .
I had a real eye opener as a young computer programmer back in1985 when an HR person screwed up with me, then got me fired to protect herself. What she didn't know, but I knew, is we were related, 2nd cousins... So I let it drop. So I decided I wasn't going to take the first job that came along, rather hold out for a job I really wanted. I Worked a temp job on 3rd shift at a hospital while interviewing, got almost 10 companies that liked me, but they all said I should wait until their budget/job posting/ moved forward "after Thanksgiving". then they pushed it off until after Xmas, and finally they all said wait until the new year budget was approved with money for new authorized jobs. Then suddenly, in one week, I got 7 job offers, 3 for double my old salary!
What was so eye opening is when I had an interview with an eighth company and wanted to cancel, but didn't have a phone number or specific name of the person I was to see at a very large bank on the eighth floor in downtown Chicago. So I went to the interview as a courtesy to explain I had a job, and while there take the opportunity to introduce myself - because you never know when a contact in the industry can lead to a new job, and maybe a year later I would want to switch jobs.
I come to the bank, and the interviewer got all excited because I had done things no one there knew how to do like writing communication programs to transfer files and data between computers, etc. Nowadays it's a software application you can buy off the shelf, but back then it was a big deal.
One eye opener was I said I'm sorry, but I have a job offer, and it starts Monday and it just isn't cool to go to a job, then quit for another job. If you want me, I have to make up a decision before the new job starts on Monday. Well, they moved the executive schedules around to get me in and interviewed on Monday. Usually moving executive schedules around never happens, You as interviewee get pushed around. Clearly they needed and wanted me.
He also asked me about salary and I didn't want to discuss it. When pushed I said he couldn't afford me, I made it clear I didn't want to "hurt" them or embarrass them. He was surprised as no one had ever said that before, so he asked why I thought the bank couldn't afford my salary. So I explained my mom told me when i opened a new bank account as a 10 year old, that banks don't pay well, except for the President and top officers. The rest get paid clerical level salaries. The interviewer was very surprised and now really wanted to know what I was being offered by the other company. This was back in 1986 and I was 3 years out of computer school - but with 2nd degree from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. I told him I was getting $52,000 and his jaw dropped in shock. No one was supposed to be getting much more than $27,000 that early in a computer career. He was so stung, I felt sorry for him and explained that the number wasn't fair because it was under a consulting contract, which meant I had to pay for my own vacation, sick days, and health insurance - which was still affordable back then. If I worked for a company with benefits, the salary would compare to $38,000 at a company.
Long story short, they brought me in Friday, with a written job offer for $38,000 and senior status = 4 weeks vacation starting in year one. So basically, your value in the eyes of an employer is simply based on how cheap they think they can buy you, and when someone else offers big bucks, they can easily up their "bid" to match it. Once you get hired though, you have very little ability to negotiate salary. So negotiate for all you can up front.
Same thing here my friend, ten years and in five of them no raise and I took over a position that they hired three people to do with certification and they couldn't do the job and like one response you got, I'm done building others business up off of the ones who do the actual work and don't get paid, it's my time now DAMN IT !
anybody in there right mind would of quit, if I were you I would of done the same thing.
I totally agree. The same thing happened to me. They got me so frazzled about my illness it drove me to quit
and come back to me ok
ok get back to me
Hi Jody....Did you become physically sick or sick of the company? One past job I had I developed pneumonia twice in a year of employment. Health is everything. Companies seldom recognize the attributes you bring to an organization, but they will remember the day you were late.
Jody, Glad to hear that you decided to put your health and wellbeing first. My hope is that you're in a better place healthwise. I find that most of the time it’s not the company itself but the unskilled people placed in leadership roles that make it unbearable for employees. You should have been referred to FMLA or given more options than having to quit. The loyalty that used to exist between employers and employees is hard to find. I understand that it’s painful and you feel betrayed but try to put that experience behind you and stay focus on improving your health.
My company I worked for had no appreciation for me because I am 55 and they are 32....I never took time off...I missed graduation ceremonies, funerals, kids events...no vacations....no bathroom breaks...no sick days for 6 years....each time it came to bonuses a promised $50k....my boss told me what a slacker I was or he wasn't making money to pay me. The company earned over $35 million in trading profits...other traders received bonuses....after 6 year I had a Skype conversation with him and he cut me loose. I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease during my employment but couldn't afford time off to heal...I will never do that to myself again. I was a business owner of more employees that he had...I earned over $80 million in my careel and treated my 65 employees like my own family.....bonuses profit sharing paid insurance....unfortunately I was cleaned out in a divorce and had to take a position with a company....but I came to them with 35 years experience and both earned and saved them over $8 million in 6 years....and they still treated me like crap. I hope I cut them deep with my statement on Glassdoor for others who may seek a job with their company....
I am sorry you had to go through this. I have a similar situation but still able to work. I soooo understand how PTSD is a real issue because of employer abuse. I have worked all my life for many many companies and never ever had such a toxic work environment aside from my own small temporary illness thing. Jody, don't lose hope. You can recover! Please take a look at www.newlife.com and tv.newlife.com. Some great resources available. Stay active and find a group of women to connect with. I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Lastly, no person should ever have to endure such stress in a work place. I am planning new steps to a better life, and all of you can too!! Maria
