Decided I couldn't wait for a real job because my unemployment was getting ready to run out and accepted a position through a staffing agency. When I applied I thought it was a job at the staffing agency, silly me. Anyway anyone who has worked through an agency knows you pretty much get nothing, no holiday pay, no sick or vacation time....nothing. And this lasts for 6 months if the business even decides to actually hire you. So now my doctor wants me to have surgery which will require a month to heal. And I have to say can't do it. No income because I can't collect unemployment and I have no benefits from the staffing agency. I know the agency makes a pretty penny from renting out my skills. Other than they only think of you as just another warm body there's no reason they couldn't offer their contract workers SOMETHING. So now I get to remain in pain every day because I can't afford to be off. /rant

If you have been on a job for 6 months, you are eligible for California Disability. Most jobs make a payroll deduction for this (SDI). Please explore this possibility rather than ignore your health.

It would have been nice if you had started looking for work as soon as you had lost your last job, then you'd only needed to have waited another couple of months to have received an interview. Too bad.

So you are indeed in a difficult situation and of course, we dont know what your surgery is for, where you are located or your age. However, dont give up. I had to walk on bone on bone knees because they I was too yoing for knee replacements, eventually moving from CA back to Houston to get them around age 57. I am a single, working lady and it wasnt easy and I did it. So can you. I had an ira and pulled money out, health is important What is a real job? At a certain age we must do the best we can, be open to change, let go of ego. You can do this. I am 67 this month and start a new job Jan 7th. I lost the last job after Thanksgiving.

Sorry about your situation....Bartering is a good way to get something done if you don't have the cash. Maybe your doctor could use your skill to get something done. Then you get your problem taken care of. Its done in Alaska all the time. Good luck !!

I don't know where you are from but I would apply for government insurance Mass Health or and Medicare. Being in pain trying to work is just about impossible. I hope everything works out for you.

Terri- Had to smile at your post when you said that you thought you were applying at the Staffing Agency not for a position they were going to get for you. When a local temp agency advertised for a recruiting specialist, I applied thinking I would be working there... It can only be said that great minds think alike!

I was fired from a company while I was on intermittent leave because medical issues, and still I got fired by a newly hired homophobic manager. I wish I would have had the health and energy to sue them. I got my dream job after that, and he was fired shortly after. Karma! Good luck Terri B!
Hi Terri. My friends in NYC tell me there are temp agencies that offer benefits--is this an option where you are?
