How was this a mistake? Did you get terminated because of it? It happens to the best of us when we're sick, we're not exactly in the right frame of mind and we become forgetful. If you're still employed, you can apologize, ensure it won't happen again, and that the next time you will provide medical documentation from your dr. Just make sure it's not a repetitive pattern and you should be ok.

Adele Dodd - Every company operates differently according to their policy. Some managers won't follow up because they just don't have the time. I've been there myself. I have contacted employees outside of work hours to check on them and to see if they will be available to work the next day. It's not a matter of not having compassion for your employees - although some companies don't, it's finding the time. :)

I am so sorry. I am surprised they didn't call to check on you. Which in all honesty they do not have to, but some companies actually care about their employees and invest in them. The ones that do not, stay away from.
