I am returning to the employment field. Any constructive criticism on getting references when you have little to no recent work experience.

Maybe you have an old co-worker that you still keep in touch with. Teachers are good too if you recently finished completed a course. If you've been doing any side jobs on a regular bases then use those clients as references.
