Need Help !

I have a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from a French speaking country in Africa. I came in the USA through the green card after I resigned from NESTLE Ivory Coast in 2012 as a Project Engineer. All the applications as Mechanical/Project Engineer that I did were denied since I came here. If I get a Master's degree in Engineering Management, do I have a chance to have a skilled job? Note: I have 7 years experience as a Project Engineer

Thanks for your help.

Yes. Hopefully. Most of the jobs to that degree take schooling . So go for it.

Hi Helene. Depending on how willing you are to relocate, consider Houston, Texas. The domestic oil business in the United States is booming (again), particularly marine oil drilling. One of the top companies that could use someone with your talents is National Oilwell Varco (NOV). They have about 25 or so offices around the Houston area. Of course, if you have any moral objections to environmentally-invasive drilling, then I would not ask you to compromise your values. Best of luck to you.

Hi Helene, I believe I responded to this post already, but a thought just popped into my head! Have you tried Mass Mutual, or other companies such as them? Not sure where you live, and not sure of your exact experience, but Mass Mutual is always looking for Project Managers and Engineers? Worth a shot, Google Mass Mutual and similar companies to see if you can find something close to where you are! From what I hear the pay is usually pretty good, but the position is without benefits, when you first start, but could be a way to get your foot in the door of a reputable company. Good luck.. :)

Hi Helene, I would say yes, if you get a Masters degree in anything, you should be in good shape career wise. The thing about completing your education here, will they transfer credits from the school you previously went to? Is it considered an accredited institution? These are things that you need to find out. How were you thinking of completing your Master's? On-line? Brick and Mortar School? Education today is just so important.

Helene, Go to edX and Coursera and learn all you can about PM and then woo the pants off the interviewer the next time you sit for an interview. Also, join Meetup groups in your area that work on environmental efforts and remediation. That shows you care about the environment and large firms with big projects like that. Lots of work in that field. Look for companies like Fluor and ICF.

You need to update your Visa and keep it current. Record all of your employment history and be sure to include references. Here is where it gets to the root of the problem. All of your references speak a foreign language. i.e. long distance call. You need to get job background in USA and references here in US to be better qualified as an engineer state side. Good luck.
