Entitlement Mentality
I read some of the rants and raves on here about corporate America doesn't care, etc that I have to share a story. When I was a college co-op student at a steel and iron foundry in 1974, I noticed a foreman who had lost his arm at the shoulder. I asked someone how it happened and he said it was in an accident at the foundry a few years before. He added that when the GM went to see the fellow at the hospital the next day, the foreman asked one question: "Do I still have a job?" The GM said "you have a job as long as you want". And they honored that, no legal suit, no disability claim, etc. Back then, people were happy to have a job irregardless of the circumstances and they sucked it up. Just like I was. It wasn't always fair maybe, and people at the top still made a lot of money, but there wasn't the "I expect a handout" attitude.
Thank you for sharing this with us, John. I'd definitely be interested in seeing what other Jobcasers have to say about the differences in the workplace back in the 70s, and today. Maybe attitudes towards employees have changed since?
