new resume

I'm 46 years old and I was laid off March 2016 and I've still been unable to find full time employment. After consulting with many resume "experts" I'm learning I'm going to have to eliminate my first 10 years of job experience from my resume. This makes me extremely sad because I worked hard in my twenties to gain important job experience. All the sacrifices, hard work, overtime, and industry experience I obtained during that time is no longer valued. If was a hiring manager I would love to see the potential employee's full career history to see how well rounded they are and what experiences they have had in life no matter how long ago they occurred. I wanted to go back to the industry I worked in during my twenties but I'm being told that any experience I gained then no longer means anything.

Mary: Eliminate anything that shows any date as to when you gained the experience. You don't want to appear to old for any new job you want. Regardless of what you may have been told, many companies are releasing those with high pensions costs associated with retaining those people. They are replaceing them with 20 to 25 years olds to sit a the recptioist position. These people will not know what Human Resources is nor will they know what they are supposed to be doing, other than accepting resumes and giving out applications. Also, those above them will be about 28 to 33 years old and will not have any experience working in Human Resources, nor will they know what questions to ask you.

These replacement people will not be in their job long. They will be replaced by someone new next week or month. They basically will be office dressing to sit in an office and look good for the company. They will be there to meet the federal requirement that someone occupy the Human Resource office & the company retain those workers over 40. The ones that receive applications and/or resumes for a posted position are window dressing because younger people are now running the comapany. They will put younger people in HR that won't know anything about HR. The receptionist in the outer office is someone from the secretary pool, and doesn't care about who comes in the door. This is all to get a younger set of employees to work for the comapany and cover their ass from the Over 40 group of employees they terminated. Welcome to the new business world. Hope you were able to keep your pension. You may need it shortly. Ten years to find a new job is what it will take those with over 15 years of experience.

I’ve been told the same thing, last 2 jobs only.. I look at it this way, if an employer wants to know more there is always the interview!

Hello Mary,

I would reduce your resume to one or two pages. Have you considered changing the format into a functional format rather than a chronological format. Recruiters do not have enough time to go through pages of work history. Make sure that you highlight your accomplishments and what value you provided to the company Use action words.

Hi Mary, I feel your pain. I too was laid-off in Aug 2013 and am yet to find work. I have tried a few temp jobs but they are not paying enough to support myself or my family. I am 59 yrs. old with 2 children and a beautiful wife. I also tried driving trucks but no money there either. Also you are away from family all the time. Try this system that I have since found and see what it can do for you. It has been awesome for me: http://www.marketingproductdeals1.com/?id=Moe11&system=wcc&product_id=65&page=fe
