Update Office Skills at 63 yrs old or is it a waste?
I have not been able to get a full time job in 9 months. I had 4 - 8 wk assignments with temp agencies. The last 2 months I have not even an interview. I send several resume's per day and make followup calls. My college degree was in 1977! I have 25 years of experience in payroll and income tax work. Should I go back to school to get Microsoft or Quick-books certification? It will take one year and clean out my savings. What are recruiters looking for? I'm in the Nashville, TN market.

A mom I know left the workforce for about 15 years to raise her children. However during tax season, she would contract with one of those tax firms. Recently she landed a payroll type position that is hourly yet offers benefits. Maybe you could do the same with your experience?

I really can't say that I will give up cause AM not a quitter IAM 51 and ur are 63 so u would have to decide what you wants to do I wish u luck.

I agree with Charles. While it may not be a bad idea to take a course or so in Microsoft Office programs (Excel seems to be making a HUGE comeback and PowerPoint is still in demand), it will show prospective employers that you're not too old to learn while having skills they may be looking for. That said, don't forget the knowledge and experience you bring that some just graduated rookie lacks. And if that doesn't work, drop a hint about the movie The Intern with Robert Dinero. It changed the way I look at Advanced Citizens in the workplace. Hope your search gets better.

Take a moment and breathe. Look at your competitors in the job market. They are 25 to 30 years old with masters degrees. The fact that you want to pursue advanced degrees at this age is admirable. What you haven't considered yet is what skills you bring to the table that these recent graduates don't possess. I am 70 years old with both a PE degree and an MBA in marketing. I am starting my own company to help people find jobs. Let me know if I can be of assistance. Good luck Jobcasers (Chicago based)

I need a good job .

The Quickbooks course seems like a good suggestion. You will find the right place that will appreciate you and value you.

I think your age has a lot to do with it . It's sad that companies won't even give you a chance for the experience that you have . They are blind sides by your age . My prayers are with you God bless you

I'm 58 and wasn't getting any job offers. I took a QuickBooks course at a university and got hired right away.

Definitely refresh your skillset. The beauty of today’s schools is that you can take your classes online. This means that you can work by day, study by evening without leaving home, and finish rather quickly.
It may seem like a burden, but when Microsoft upgrades Office every three years, it only makes sense to upgrade your skills along with it. Speaking of which, make sure you learn Microsoft Outlook first. All clerical operations run on Outlook. Emails, calendar, tasks, contact lists, you name it. I mean, look at me; I’m 54 and still learning. Now go for it!
