Too Short Sighted

Some manager told me I don’t have have a job today because I’m too short sighted. I think his comment centered around my inability to accept a job paying under fifteen dollars per hour. I’m not the most experienced worker in the world but in my opinion accepting anything under that here in the Northeast USA is ridiculous. Some companies like to push benefits but what’s the value of an employee benefit if you can’t change it in for cash if you don’t need it. I’m done with being sold on all those false promises of health and education benefits no one ever seems to qualify or use. I’ve never worked with anybody who’s benefited from one of those career advancement program. Why is that? Where am I lacking vision here?

I think your manager is the one who is short sighted. You may have wanted a salary that was above what he was earning. Most business use a trickled down theory on wages and the last one to feel a raise is the lowest man on the totem pole. So you may have been above him & he was upset about it.

Hope you find the work you want at the wage rate you want. Seattle pays a minimum rate around $15. Surrounding cities are about the same. Sea-Tac Airport was in the news because they wanted uniform wages of $15 per hour & got it. It was given to them as the result of an voter initiative.

I can understand your frustration however, I have also worked for company's which offered competative salaries ans enhanced benefits. Educational benifits, computer loan programs, donations to schools employees identify, flex hous, job sharing and many other perks.

The key is to find out which programs are offered then systematically use them. Many companies honor those promises and those who try to fold if you take it up to corporate they will also following through.

Try to keep an open mind , you will find many hidden treasures you can take advantage of to enhance your life or the lives of others. Good hunting

Kathy:

What type of work are you applying for? There is often an accepted market value for positions, most jobs pay at industry standard. There is some adjustment based upon cost of living, but if you are looking for entry level work or work in a call center/customer service industry, you aren't going to clear 15.00 easily.

I wouldn't say you are short-sighted because of your desire to make more, but not working because you are holding out for more could be hurting your chances of finding employment. Especially if you are unemployed right now. Whatever you are offered will be more than zero dollars, and you can then look for a new job while at least having money coming into the bank.

At the end of the day, it is up to you. I would research your industry of choice and see what similar positions in the area are paying. There is a lot of valuable salary information on www.glassdoor.com

Simply look up a company and research salaries for the various positions.

Good luck to you!
