Questions of Value
I’m a data entry clerk for a small company updating customer account information collected from the previous days request but lately I find that I rarely have anything to do. I’ve been doing the same job for over a year and a half and mastered it to a point where I’m completely done with all my work by lunchtime. The rest of the afternoon is an agonizing struggle to find something to keep me busy throughout the remainder of the day. My boss is usually out of the office or in meetings so I don’t think he realizes I'm run out of work to do. Job security is a concern but at this point I’d rather have enough work to keep me busy help make my workday go by faster. How can I request more work without leading management to question my value and jeopardizing my position?

- I spent 8 hrs doing nothing @ a temp job that was not set up yet Later that year I was called back 2x by 2 depts w/in the company. 2. Use the time to call cable, your credit card company, your friend...(on your own phone). Most people would give an arm and a leg to get through to companies that only operate 9-5!!! Just my 2 cents

Explain that to your boss and ask him to either promote you to a position that is more difficult or give you more work.

Hi Linda, first of all, it is phenomenal that you have a process in place that has allowed you to have time to look at what else you might be able to take on for the company. You have solved the issue that they have placed before you and can do it with time left over, Explain that you would like to master more to become an even greater asset to this company. Having great assets as a small company will help them become a great larger company. I wish you all things good in your endeavors :-)

slow down you move to fast you gotta make the morning last.. plan it out hour by hour .. take a hike to the bathroom review something from yesterday.. give yourself some time to think relax and there is a huge management bit going round on how to reduce stress on the staff and team... bet you do a great job.. you just are like so many of us.. if you can lean you can clean McDonalds Taco Bell Burger King... but I have worked in offices and watched so many that are good at stretching the day... we had been sitting here for 2 years.. watching our work being farmed out to other places.. we now have the ability to bring it back with Gold Stars on it.. and are loving how the day moves once again.. but still ...have to remember that song... Slow down you move to fast you gotta make the morning last... yep.. you can do it ... smell the coffee think about what you will do for Christmas.. time to start that hand written letter to your Mom Grandma or just something that would make you happy... prayers and enjoy the summer... Lunch hey Its lunch time...

I know How you feel. I'm in the same Situation. When I'm finished I ask others if there is anything I can do to help. I've been advised to bring in a book to read. I, like you, go to work to work not sit doing nothing.

Hi Linda, Careful how you approach your boss on this Linda. It's not a good Idea to bluntly say your bored at work. Approach your boss in a way that makes you look like an employee who wants to tackle new challenges and become more engaged with at work. You could mention that you feel ready to take on new projects or that you want to help the company in new ways.
At this point it may be time to look into another field where you are more challenged. The best time to find another job is while you have a job: a good reference book is Guerilla Job Hunting ( I'm using it for my job search). Asking for more responsbility is a great idea ( and you can cleverly add that to your resume) . It may be time for a career change.
