Background Checks
I am having a very hard time finding a job due to my background check. I have a felony and it's been about 3-4 years. Every application is done online and so therefore it takes away from meeting someone face to face so that I can explain. It was something that I plead no contest to but unfortunately I am still being judged. I just need someone to take a chance and give me a chance. My life is not where it use to be. I live in Dickson TN so jobs are very limited in customer service/call center. I have had call center's refuse an interview once they ask if I can pass a background check. To me it is so unfair and judgmental.

Hi Christina, welcome to Jobcase!
It certainly hurts when it seems like you can't outrun your past, especially if your past isn't representative of who you actually are as a person. Something I can promise you: you're absolutely not the only person on Jobcase going through this. There's actually a group for ex-offenders right here on Jobcase: https://www.jobcase.com/groups/EFDAAB25684C498FB2AFCC626B1E30C4
Here's a fantastic resource specifically for ex-offenders in the world: https://exoffenders.net/. This website was created to help folks in your position learn about their options and give them the tools they need to re-enter the workforce. They also offer a really helpful list of companies that are known for hiring ex-offenders: https://exoffenders.net/employment-jobs-for-felons/. You can search for jobs at these companies by clicking Jobs & Companies at the top of the page to get the Jobcase job search page!
Try to remember that your past is not what makes you. It's a lesson you've learned from. Remember this when you interview. The unfortunate reality is that a lot of employers won't be willing to overlook your past. This means you have to be even stronger, more resilient, and more dedicated than other folks applying for jobs. It's an uphill battle but I'm sure you have the strength to do it.
This one's another site that might offer you some help: https://www.iseek.org/exoffenders/index.html-- it actually gives you information about some of the benefits for the employer for hiring you: https://www.iseek.org/exoffenders/find-job/benefits-ex-offenders.html.
Your profile says you're in Dickson, TN. There might be a government career office or career center near you. You can check out possible help here: https://www.tn.gov/workforce/topic/find-local-help
Finally, please don't forget to be kind to yourself and to others as you go through this process. Try to be strong and have patience-- somewhere out there is an employer who is willing to listen to you and actually hear what you have to say. It may take some time, but we will be here for you as long as it takes!
