Buy Planner Inventory Control at Worthington Industries

Experience vs Degree

The hardest part of my job search has been finding a company that is willing to look at my years of manufacturing experience in lieu of a degree. My last 10 - 15 years with Worthington was in a Material Planning / Inventory Control role. Plus several years of Scheduling. But, I feel in most cases that my resume does not even reach the eyes of a hiring manager because it is getting kicked out of the system due to the lack of a degree.

I know people think I shouldn't have to need a degree if I have years of experience. That might be true( in my case, the masters degree classes just made me fully comprehend the population I work with). Years of experience coupled with a degree just sets you over the top. Due to my degree, I not only have full knowledge of my field. I also have knowledge of other related fields and not just because I have worked with others and also know the in and outs about their field of work.

This is why I insist on putting my skills on my resume. On paper, as far as education and experience go, I don't look like much, but I have a lot of applicable and highly valued skills in my field. I even separate out my skills by ones I learned through my professional experience and ones I learned through my own interest. It shows initiative and that you like to learn, which I do. Good luck.
