Written up for doing too much?

I was called into the office today for taking too much initiative. I guess my boss felt like I was trying to take some of his tasks away from him and do them better. I was basically told to follow directions and not to go above my boss's head, if I finished my work and needed more things to do I need to ask before starting something new. This is just so weird to me because my work ethic has always been that of excelling and doing my best. This came out of left field. Where do I go from here? #advice

I'm sorry this happened to you! It sounds like you were just trying to go above and beyond but instead of being rewarded were scolded! Could you ask your boss if there are other responsibilities they would be more comfortable with you taking on after you finish? Or what they want you to focus on when you have time to spare? Perhaps another job with more to do would be a better option as well. What do you think you'll do next? Is this the right place for you in other ways? 💕

There's got to be more to this if a write-up was done.

What was the wording on the write-up? This isn't ringing true.

Going over your bosses head sounds like you’re going above your pay grade. I’d it possible that you needed authorization on work you considered finished? There’s more to the story than you you telling others. I have the distinct feeling that you operated completely out of step with the company’s culture. It’s great to take initiative, but it sounds to me like you think a little more highly of your work than your boss and perhaps the people above him. Remember, if you were qualified for their position, you would have already been there.

Hey it sounds like your supervisor or manager is threatened by your work ethic. They may feel like you are coming after their position. So if he/she writes you up enough on paper you don't seem qualified or ready to lead. I apologize but I wouldn't recommend you signing that write up. I would take that write up all the way up the corporate ladder. It could help or hurt your career. I speak for my work ethic when I say I always bet on myself.

Personally, this is what a boss does. A leader recognizes talent and effort and fosters it, not holds it back because they feel threatened.

I’ve actually seen this happen a lot but try to consider your opinion and your bosses if you do the work he/she has been tasked to do from their superiors then it might make them look a certain way and there will always be a chain of command and protocols that need to be followed I’m sure if you would of asked for additional task he/she would of gave them to you and maybe they had some different ones in mind I get the initive and that’s great but just consider their position in the matter as well

Been there, done that. Follow the rules. Continue to show that you have a great work ethic, for six months or so. If you are not rewarded in some way (promotion, wage increase, more responsibility), start looking for another job. Learn some new skills online during the next six months.
