What would you do?
So today was my second day working a part time job in retail and this situation arose. I will share how I handled it as one of the choices and list how the other4 persons handled it. 2 People did the same thing so there are 4 choices. Share how you might handle it.
On the 1st day you are trained and counseled by your manager that customers are never to handle a $4000 Check and credit/debit card reader/processor and it should always remain inside the cashier bay and you must verify check or card (look at it). Its your 2nd day of training and your manager places you with a seasoned worker to assist and observe the manager adds that this is the fastest and most accurate cashier and what ever she teaches you do that. You notice the processor is on the counter and customers are swiping their cards themselves. You mention to the cashier what you were taught by the manager and the cashiers says she doesn't care and she is not going to do it she doesn't have time and she refuses to touch anyone's credit/debit card. What do you do? Customers are now in line at your register.
A. Continue to tell the cashier that's not what you were instructed to do, and debate the issue.
B. Agree with the cashier that you don't care either, elaborating on reasons why you don't care in.
C. Stay quiet and let the cashier argue with other trainees and tell the manager later when you are able.
D. Leave the cashier bay, start clearing hangers, straightening displays and taking recoveries to their department bins which is also a cashier's responsibility.
I will share what I did and why after some of you respond.

C

I would be shocked that the training manager set me with someone who does not follow store policy. Nor did they make an effort to check that this cashier did. After all, it's kinda hard to miss that $4000.00 card reader on the counter top. You could argue that when the training manager said "that this is the fastest and most accurate cashier and whatever she teaches you do that'" they were telling you to do it her way.

A

Ok where is this tell me country name .u know I have lots of experience is retail n wholesale work . Now how can I get that job

C i would stay quite and continue on outher task that needed to be done at the cashier's bay and until it is an appropriate time to speak to the manager about your concern's of the actions that have been taken at the cashier's bay.

I chose D. Here's why: They were getting louder and louder. Why argue with the cashier? I can't put the machine where the manager said because the cashier is responsible and she is already saying she is not going to do it so to try would just escalate the problem. There are 5 people remember and 3 customers have now lined up and they are carrying on in front of them. The cashier is already at the register the other 4 can bag if needed. The Manager is not in site in the front of the store and I can not leave my area. It's my 2nd day and I don't want any part of that hot mess brewing lol I left the bay and began recovering the area I was responsible for, when the manager came back the hot mess was in full swing. They were all counseled, the cashier most of all. My perspective was to show initiative by completing other tasks while distancing myself from the foolishness.

A. Would be my answer. It doesn't matter what she said. You were told the rules and as a new employee you have to abide by your manager who trained you. But I would talk to your managet about how she trained you.

I would let the manager know after I try to persuade the associate once more in private.
thanks
