Transitioning Career

Any advice to someone wanting to transition her career to HR? I've worked in consumer research for the past 15 years but have always wanted to get into HR. I understand I would have to start from the ground up. Any thoughts would be more than welcome.

I just may be the droid you are looking for.

"I do follow, Ms Browne, but you see the snag is... if I now call Mr Chipperfield and say to him, 'look here, I've got a forty-five-year-old chartered accountant with me who wants to become a lion tamer', his first question is not going to be 'does he have his own hat?' He's going to ask what sort of experience you've had with lions."

Dorianne, I have been in HR for a number of years and a good way to transition into it as a career is to start as an HR Coordinator. Generally coordinators get to touch every HR function so you will gain experience and skills in different areas. SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) has a job board, so you may want to check that out. Also, I recommend joining any HR Linked In groups to start connecting with professionals.

Sourcing Recruiter at Jobcase

Hi Dorianne, Have you ever thought about going into a career in HR potentially as an analyst for an Executive Search firm. These people are responsible for doing the back end research on the marketplace to create target lists of companies and candidates to pipeline and contact. This is more in the recruiting industry (a part of HR) but could be an interesting place to try and start. This may be a good path to try and follow because of your previous experience with consumer research...
