Frustrated and discouraged!
I have been out of work for nearly three years. I have been job hunting day in and day out for the majority of those three years. I have two college degrees and a masters degree. Either I get no replies back from an application that I've submitted or I get that I'm overqualified/under qualified. My degree is in social work but I made the decision long ago to leave that field. However, with jobs being so hard to come by (apparently), I haven't limited myself. I have literally applied to nearly every field- from retail, to social services, to hospitality, to banks, etc. Anything at this point will do but no one is biting.
I've written and re-written my resume and cover letters more times than I can count. I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I should have been volunteering or taking classes of some kind while I searched for work the last three years- I get that. But I thought that all my time should be devoted to finding a job. (I realize now how wrong I was.)
I just wish that someone would just give me a chance. I have great references but no one will even let me get to that far. I have gone to temp agencies, head hunters, etc. Nothing.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am having a really hard time dealing with emotional toll this is taking on me- not to mention the financial difficulties.
Thanks in advance!
Best, Mara

Hi Maria, You have a solid amount of education and degrees from some very reputable universities. Don't count on online application as a means of landing good jobs; especially with your level of education. Those apps rate applicants based on keywords rather than actual qualifications that matter. You have a higher chance of landing a good job through someone you know or a friend of a friend. Have you contacted the alumni services department at Fordham for an updated list of active alumni? Those are the sources you should be invested in making contact with instead of searching online. Retails jobs and those other industries are going to be highly skeptical to offer you a job with your educational background because they know you'll leave the minute you get a better offer. Better off leaving all that out of your application. What other industry have you looked into for employment?

Thanks Mara i appreciate it. I probably shouldn't have gone off on your post but as you say people take things at face value without the background story. But i do appreciate the encouragement. I just want him to know that yes that's what my career is but my standards are not set on that. I have two children so at this point it doesn't matter where i work. I just need a job.

Reginald.. I'm stating facts. I'm a victim of domestic violence. So sir i need a job like today so i can move away before my Emergency Protective Order is up. So I've been looking at everything. And I've applied..So please don't tell me what i haven't done. I apply for over 10 jobs a day. Everyday.... But you have a nice day and keep drawing your own conclusions like you have been...

I've been looking for 4 months. Food service mainly. 1 interview. 1 missed phone call. My daughter goes out couple of weeks she has a job. She said she got a little frustrated so she started going back and checking in everywhere she applied. One lady told her she liked how she dresses and she liked how she presents her self I'm going to try that. I have 36 years in food service so it's not about that. God bless you put it in Jesus hands

Well hun we must all be doing something wrong.

I feel you i am just trying to get a job. Especially when you know that you're qualified for the positions that you apply for. You start to get discouraged and especially when you're use to working.

High paying jobs for highly qualified individuals do not get posted on websites and media but are given to hired recruiters to fill.First, you need to commit to a career, then locate a recruiter in that field, request a phone interview and show your credentials. Having too much education and not enough work experience will knock you out of most advertised positions as you'd command more than entry-level pay. If you are switching fields, find a job you want and write a cover letter mirroring point by point jon duties and requirements and then do the same with your resume even if it means leaving off a non-related degree. In the meantime volunteer inyour fiels and collect letters of recommendation.

Have you researched positions at government agencies?

....Well---why don't you go to the Person who Made you.....ask Jesus.....Like you've said, you've tried EVERYTHING---and as far as I can see...you've done more than I have....But it is Very Important to Realize that just as you have parents, here on Earth---you are a child of God---and have Heavenly Parents....and just as you confided & seeked out help, advice, direction, guidance & Wisdom from Mom & Pop---how much More can the God Family change things fer de Better??...The Holy Bible is God's ' instruction manual ' for humans....if you're unemployed--how about Reading a Book??...with the Bible, start with page One, just like ANY other book---and keep reading until de Last Page.....thataways, you'll See what a Wonderful & Powerful ( True ) Story it actually is.....lotsa people pick up de Bible and start reading it Willy-Nilly, here, there....nowhere in particular....Would you do that with Any other book?? NO---because it wouldn't make any Sense....and speaking of sense---Unless God's Holy Spirit gives a person GRACE & Discernment---Holy Scripture will just be too confusing....it is Built like that for a Reason....that'sa Why it is Super Important to humbly Pray---FIRST---that de God Family prepares your mind for Understanding...if all this seems complicated---it'sa actually pretty Easy....Dear Jesus, I've tried everything I could think of to find employment...I'm not even asking for much---I'll take just about anything...Since You know what I need, even Before I ask for it---please let me know where I should go, who to talk to, what to do....I'm frustrated & tired....Your shoulders are Bigger than mine---please take this off my back...and please help me Read Your Holy Words & let my mind be Blown Away by the Truth's & Principles....In Your Most Holy Name, the Only Name given the Power to Save---Jesus---please help....according to Your Will & Perfect Timing I (we) ask...Thank You, so much...amen.....Shalom ( peace ) to you Mara...and may you be Blessed with your heart's desires....
