To leave, or not to leave.....

Recently, I closed the doors to my business. I am now seeking employment but it seems to hurt me in looking for a job by mentioning that I was a previous owner. Should I just leave it off the resume?

Don,

The moment you mention you previously owned a business, you become labeled as overqualified. Especially if you understand business, rules, regulations, etc. I'd suggest to keep the history on your resume, but refrain from volunteering that you owned a business. You can state that you were an "operations manager" or something that doesn't place you in an "overqualified" bucket just to be discriminated against. Especially, if you're seeking some type of manager based position.

I also suggest revising your resume that allows you to use your former business as work related experience, but doesn't point out that you actually owned a business once upon a time. You need the work history, not the setback. Once you make some revisions, try again and you might see a difference in how your persona is perceived. I hope this helps you, and good luck!
