Foul Play

I was approached by Avacend for a job with UPS. It was guaranteed $22/hr and only a 3 month assignment. I jumped at the chance just getting my foot in the door and to save $$$ for after the 3 months to pursue something else if they didn't hire me on. Well they officially offered it to me, I accepted and filled out all necessary paperwork and sent Driver's License, SS Card and Voided check. They said they will contact me on when to start. Days went by I called/emailed. They said they didn't hear from UPS. Another few days I called/emailed again saying this is ridiculous when do I start? It was just this past week (accepted position November 22) that the rep said she finally heard from UPS and the position was filled. HUH? Are you kidding me you offered it to me I accepted it. I have not been actively looking for the past 2+weeks as I was assured I was hired! Now she is saying they feel so bad, it normally does not happen, she has UPS looking for something else I might be able to do. Thoughts on this?

They’re supposed to be letting you work because you had all your paperwork already assigned to the company. I would talk it over with the representatives but don’t ensue any arguments at all. Don’t be frustrated and talk the labor department manager about your current situation so this can be resolved.

Sounds like you got soaked. Last I heard from UPS is that they hire direct and start you as a seasonal worker on the 3am to 11:30am shift. They start you at around $13/hr in the Chula Vista, CA depot. Considering that the California minimum wage is $10/hr, their entry-level wage isn’t much, but their health benefits are the best in town, and did I hear free?

So why send a copy of your driver’s license, social security card, and a voided check in the age of electronic pay to a company named after the anagram of advance (stranger danger) instead of walking up to UPS?

The same thing has happened to me with a different company. Just tell them to kiss your ass & continue looking on your own.

I read your story here and I am sorry this has happened to you but many people I know have experienced the same thing with UPS as all I have ever heard from them was totally negative feedback to the letter. The worst story I had ever heard was a from a man who was hired as a temporary driver to deliver packages and deliver packages only and one morning he showed up to the distribution center to have his truck filled up with packages and his delivery schedule and one of the bosses there had demanded him to go into the Men's room there and clean up the mess that was discovered by a worker there and he decided to go do it until he went into the Men's room and found the most disgusting mess he had ever seen in his entire life and he went back out to the boss and told the boss he refused to clean it up and then the boss turned around and terminated him on the spot for not doing what he was ordered to do. He went back into the Men's room and took a photo of the mess for evidence and later on when he got home he contacted UPS corporate about it and he never heard anything back at all. I would think really hard before accepting any type of job with UPS...!

Hello, Jen, Two things.

  1. Unless it is a temp agency, NEVER accept a position at a third party for "guaranteed wages". In your case, I guarantee you UPS wasn't going to pay you $22/hour regardless, when they directly pay their own people less. It may or may not be a scam, but this can be a lesson learned for you.
  2. Unless you have a start date after they offer you the position, do not stop looking for work, This case is a great example as to why. This will keep your blood pressure down and also open the door to more possible job prospects. Again, this can be one more learning experience.

Geez, who said you need a degree to learn anything?? Experience can be a great, and sometimes cruel, teacher. Best wishes in your job search.

Ms. CRB below has a great answer. They (UPS) "overbooked" like an airline--trying to insure/ensure they'd have a backup candidate/actual hire (YOU!!!) for the position in case their "inside/unknown to others" candidate bombed out.Third parties raise red flags with me; amber/yellow ones at the minimum. Communication breakdown somewhere. I hope you have identity theft protection of some kind--these people have some very personal/damaging info of yours.

Ya, they hired a friend or family member of someone who already works there. Unfortunately it happens quite often and at the last second
