Teacher at Richmond Public Schools

What it is like to work for DPS (Detroit Public S)

I would say that working in Detroit Public Schools was both rewarding and frustrating. I mean that I enjoyed working with the students in the classroom, my fellow coworkers/teachers as well as the school administrators. However, the central office staff were aloof, confused and indifferent for the most part. I also earned a very decent salary while working there. Many times you hear all of these "horror stories" about the big city and in particular, Detroit city and bad things do happen but in spite of this, I was able to maintain a very nice style of living while still there. Unfortunately, I was one of those hundreds of thousands of laid-off city workers during the" Great Depression Pt.2", including the "Great Meltdown" of the auto industry there. It has taken me this long to get back on my feet and regain stability.

Detroit city has had its number of setbacks over the last decade or so but I hear the city is making a comeback. I read recently the city was undergoing a nationwide hiring initiative for teachers. It’s always a good sign when cities invest in education.
