Why can’t I get hired
I have worked steady for the last 32 years. I was at one company for thirty years and the place was full of tension and stress it was time for me to leave. Then I was hired to clean up a mess at a new company and I was hired at a higher pay rate then they paid the girl I replaced. I cleaned up the mess and put new systems in place. Everything was going well till this past September and I was let go due to cutbacks. No negotiation on taking a pay cut. I’ve been looking for a job since then and jobs that I interviewed for I should of gotten but did t. I feel like I am getting bad references fro my first job but I don’t know how to prove if I’m getting bad mouthed from them. I don’t know what to do u have been applying to jobs outside my field I have been on several interviews some which I was more then qualified but hear nothing back. I am super stressed as I am about to run out of unemployment funds and I am the only pay check in my house. Super stressed
In a perfect world, a past employer would only confirm dates of employment and job titles, but unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world. In fact, reporting bad reference checks is common. If you keep getting to second interviews and don't get job offers or go beyond that stage of the hiring process then chances are one of your old bosses is reporting negative comments about you.
You can use reference check companies like http://www.checkmyreferences.com/ or you can also try asking a close friend or family member to call the those employers directly and ask for a reference check. Might me worth looking into this if you feel what they are reporting is keeping you for a job.
