Applying On-Line for a job....

I've been applying for work On-Line to what's being posted. These people that are suppose to be hiring are not. I've applied to this establishment because I got it in my Inbox that they were looking for someone. I even went into the workplace I applied for & all I was told was to apply again. By that time I had already applied about 3 times. Then the girl tells me she has to go into the computer & look-up my application. I told her I left my resume here last time. Then after all that, she tells me she has my resume. What's the problem? Why can't we just fill-out applications like we used to in "the Olden Days?" Much easier.

Sandra, as someone who actually does this sort of thing I can tell you from first hand experience that getting an interview is similar to winning the lottery. Larger companies use an HR metrics system to collect and categorize applications. The sheer volume of what is received would make it impossible for a human to collate this information. You also need to understand that hiring based on immediate or seasonal need commences several weeks prior to the season so that the army is already in place and schedules drawn up once the busy season is in full swing. Attrition hiring (replacing retirees, terminations and promotions) is semiannual based on budget and training needs. You need to get your application past metrics. Einstein once wrote that "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Your applications are no different. Submitting the same app in the same way will produce the same result-a general "we have your app on file" response. Resubmitting your app with keywords, additional line items and extra areas of interest cues the HRSI program to categorize your application differently and bypass the minimum standard metrics. Therefore both timing and ingenuity will get you a winning lottery ticket so to speak and the rest is up to you. I hope this helps and good luck with your search.

Sandra I hear you loud and clear so here are a couple of tip1

  1. Put your education in the beginning not the end of your resume
  2. Make a good seperations on your experience make a title and time frame for the header
  3. Give results and numbers as to accomplishments. "What have u done and what can you do for me
  4. Here is the tricky one. Look at what they are looking for then use their words to describe your accomplishments. The problem with the program that HR uses is that it counts key words
  5. Make your first bullet a reach out and grab you bullet. Because they may be looking at 1000 resumes so make yours jump at them. You are the 1 in a 1000 applicant 6 and lastly NEVER have a standard resume for all jobs make each one job specific

This advice took me years to perfect. A lot of trial and ERROR. Mostly it was my ego. I said "if they want me they'll read my resume...... Yes I know ego that's why I put error in all caps It wasn't until I honestly spoke to a HR manager that I truly began to get the process

Hope this helps everyone Jerome L Mester, PhD

What company is this for Sandra? Online application is the method companies are using now to hire new employees but getting that application processed successfully requires another skill all-together. I would suggest you stay away from applying via smartphone to avoid the frustration of loosing all of your information. Check your emails after you submit for an application confirmation notice then call the company where you applied and ask to speak to someone knowledgeable on the hiring process like Human Resources, Personnel Manager, or Manager about your application.

Hi Sandra: I hear you! In theory, the online application process is supposed to make it easier for recruiters/HR to keep track of who's applied, and who's qualified for the positions. But the software they use often discounts people with great experience, so it's not always the best system. But good for you for following up - that's the kind of persistence that's eventually gonna lead to a job!
