So Frustrated by Age/Experience Discrimination
I am 43, have over 20 years customer service/ call center experience, over 10 years supervisory experience in a call center setting, and have the patience, phone etiquette, and de-escalation skills that can't be beat. I've been to over 20 interviews, 5 second intetviews, and even told in 3 of the interviews that I had the position and that they would need a few days to tie up loose ends (as they were replacing current employees) and they would call me with details....only to then blow me off. My resume is 100% accurate, my references are good, but I still keep getting put off with no explaination. I think it's my age...just because I'm older than most of my potential superiors and they know I've been in their position...I think they are intimidated. I am the most bubbly, upbeat person ever. I believe in teamwork and even when I was a supervisor or a member of management, I never considered myself more important or on a higher level of respect than the CSR agents on my team. I mean, yes, I had more responsibilities than they did, but they respected me because I respecter them. I really feel like my age and my experience are hurting my chances of getting some of the positions I've applied for. I'm starting to lose all hope. All I want is a position that I can literally pour my heart and soul into. I have so much to offer a potential employer, if I could just be given the chance

This is very true as I feel the same way. I have been looking for a job for over two years now and have only heard back from one resume that I have forwarded. I’m 46 and feel very discriminated against because of my age. I feel your pain

Apply at Apple for the stay at home advisor. My sister works from home for the call center and loves her job and makes great money.

Have you sent your Resume through any of the professional review services on the internet? I did with mine, and took some of the advice and made some changes. It helped, a few items really jumped out. In last 10 years you have many jobs listed way more than average. If some were part time, do you list on your resume that way. And here is the big one, I had this as a pointer too. Your resume should not read like a job description. You need to list what you have accomplished, how you made where you worked a better place. List your skills. Like could handle multiple line voice system, had all 12 skill sets for voice system at Z company. Trained and mentored 20 CSR's, Improved their QA scores. Have full Microsoft office intermediate level, use Outlook for email, calendaring, scheduling meetings. And so on. You want to make it easy for those reading your resume to see what you have accomplished, what your skill set is, what your passion is. Good Luck.

I wish I could.

Open your own business.

Keep on going Kimberly. I have applied at hundreds of places for hundreds of positions. Same thing. I’m 44, look younger, but I started to follow up with a Thank You letter I send right after the interview and have seen much better communication coming from the potential employer. Not sure if you tried this route yet, but I highly recommend it. Don’t give up, the right job is around the corner.
